Wednesday, nov. 21 i 194s Rural Telephone Line Progresses Progress In organization of the Swalley Telephone company wae reported nere today by Jaen Krius, president of the group, who an nounced that wire for all the lines has been secured, and about two thirds of the other necessary ma terials, with the exception of poles, have been ordered. , Construction of side legs Is expected to get under way early next year, accord ing to officials of the company. About 60 families who will be served by the new line have al ready bought shares of stock in the company, and approximately 20 more who have Indicated they wish to join, will be solicited, Gordon Wilcox, secretary, pointed out. Residents of the Glen Vista sec " tion and parts of the Tumalo-Des-chutes community, which will be included in the district, are be ing urged to buy their member ships without delay, so that the remaining materials may be bought and preliminary negotia tions completed in preparation for construction. He-Survey Due A re-survey of the proposed service will be made by the I'a cif ic Telephone & Telegraph comp- 1 any, when memberships in the new company is completed. Early last summer the former group made a survey of needs of the dis trict, on which cost estimates for the project were based. Since that time, several who were not for merly Included in the list of poten tial users have Indicated that they would like to Join the company, and others have dropped out, be cause of changes In ownership of eertuin property in the section, or other reasons. This will necessi tate a new engineering Job, to de termine exactly where lines must be run, and how much material will be required, it was pointed out today. The company was organized last July, when officers were elected. Besides Kribs and Wilcox, officers are D. C. Dyer, vice-president; and it. c. Williams, Mux Hopper, Vic tor R. Haworth and J. S. Frukes, directors. Lt.R.E. Grimes Y-tomb' Veteran Lt. Ralph E. Grimes, who as a navy gunnery officer made 12 crossings of the Atlantic and was in Antwerp, Belgium, when that port was under "buzz bomb" at tack, is a civilian again, and just as soon as space can be located he will resume his office as local manager of the Equitable Life In surance company here. Lt. Grimes was In the service just short of four years, and in all his Atlantic service he was navy officer in charge of armed guard crews. North Africa, England and Euro pean ports were visited, and he had opportunity while abroad to visit some or the canitals of west ern turope, including Pans. Alter the first of the vcar. Lt. Grimes and his wife, Margaret, are to make their home at 1355 Harmon boulevard, in Bend. On Nov. 24, the Bend man will fly from Seattle, Wash., to New York, to attend a refresher school sDon- sored by his company, and later he and Mrs. Grimes will visit his mother in Long Beach, Calif., for the Christmas holidays. urimes sister. U VAN Hl'KFK.L Phone 20 Over 600 Pupils Visit At Library Between six and seven hundred pupils of Bend and vicinity visited the Deschutes county library in groups during Book week, which ended Saturday, Nov. 17, accord' lne to Miss Eleanor Brown, coun ty librarian. The number this year was slightly lower than last year because of there being only four days available Instead of five. Monday, Nov. 12, the library and the schools were closed for Armis tice day observance. Kenwood school sent the larg est number, eight groups. Keia was second with four, and Allen third with two. Mrs. Marguerite Boyd, teacher of Young school, out on Butler road, brought her group In by car, and Tumalo had planned to come but was pre vented at the last moment by dus trouble. The lower four grades were en tertained with a story by Miss Elsie White, children's librarian, or Miss Edith Brown, her assis tant. The new books and special exhibits were shown the children, and all who did not have cards were signed up as borrowers. Nearly 100 new juvenile borrow ers have already received cards, and many more are expected as a result of the Book week activi ties. Strike Situation Still Deadlocked Portland, Ore., Nov. 21 (IP The northwest's five-state AFL lumber strike, going into its 59Ui day today, remained at a deadlock be tween the union's demand for a $1.10 an hour wage minimum and the continually increasing employ er offers of 12',i cent-compromise raise. In Vancouver, Wash., AFL workers reaffirmed their determ ination to continue striking for $1.10 an hour, while at Reedsport, Ore., conflicting reports pointed to both acceptance and rejection of the 12 Vi cent raise. E. H. Card, manager of the Oregon coast lumber operators as sociation, announced the Reeds port local has voted to accept the pay boost and resume work "un der certain conditions," providing the Coos Bay district council agreed. But Fritz Hagan, district coun cil business agent, denied the re port, and the strike committee in Portland said it had been advised the Reedsport local had rejected the operators' proposal.
