Irregular Drop
Noted on Market
By Elmer C. Walzer
(United jTwxa Financial Ellt,r)
New York, May 9 ill'i- Stocks
made an irregular decline today
on contracted volume.
Special issues attracted a sub
stantial following hut the main
. list was neglected und a suffici
ent number of jails and industri
als receded to bring declines in
those averages. Small gains pre
dominated In the main group ol
utilities.
Market operators moved cau
tiously because of the uncertain
ties over partial reconversion of
Industry. Big .corporations said
they had no idea that the govern
ment had In mind regarding the
changeover and they were main
taining a crossed-fingers altitude.
As a result the trading element
in stocks tended to sell the so-
called war issues and buy select
ed issues in the peace groups.
Ullities, building shares, some
of the rail equipments and steam
ship lines were active, in tne
latter group American export
lines made a new high on a rise
of more than 2 points and U.. S.
lines rose nearly a point. Coppers
made new highs and then backed
uway on profit-taking.
