MILE OF TRACK
Begin with a strip of land 150 feet wide.
Grade to desired height and level, provid
ing for ditches, culverts and bridges. Then
apply 3,250 chemically-treated ties, 6,500
metal tie plates, 271 steel rails, 2,700 rail
anchors, 13,000 spikes, 1,084 bolts and
many tons of heavy ballast. Add signals
and switches as necessary.
That makes one mile of Great Northern
main line track. Thousands of such miles of
rugged track between the Great Lakes and
the Pacific make the foundation for Great
Northern's dependable freight service.
