Keeps' Home
Meat as Pin
Sioiightdn, WW: rtPi One ol the
neatest homes- in the neat' little
community of Stoughton, Wis.; is1
cared for by four persons who
never see the1 results of their
labor . . .."
The four-two brothers and two
sisters' of the Erdahl- family-all
are deaf, dumb and blind; yet they
manage' their", household chores
with practically" no assistance:
The youngest) Mabel," has- the
job of keeping her brothers and
sister in touch with the outside
.world because she has learned to
ead Braille. She also adds to the
family income-by, selling, her dain
ty crochet work.
The task of caring for the fur
nace and supply the house with
kindling fails to'eiarence, 48, who
can' spilt wood asr easily aS if he
could see his woodpile.
Earl, 51 Is the family gardener.
He also fetches water from -a next
door pump by following a clothes
line as a guide.
The family's meals are prepared
by Clara, 55, who can cook a tasty
dish on the stove invisible to her.
Moving with sure steps, she also
keeps the home in first-rate order1.
Born deaf and dumb, the Ed
dahls early learned to become in
dependent despite a double handi
cap. Then, as each neared the age
of 20,' his eyesight' began to fail
and he had-to learri to live in an
invisible as well as silent world.
. The only assistance, the Erdahls
now receive' is from a neighbor
woman; who talks-with them
througH'the'Hand' language and
who' helps buy their groceries,
handle their finances and assists
I .with the washing. The rest of the
'chores, including ironing, are man-
