Decline Suffered
By Stock Market
By Elmer C. Walzer
(llnttwi J'raaa Financial Edlbir)
New York, Feb. 21 HP) Stocks
had their widest decline of the
year today on what Wall street
interpreted as a federal reserve
drive to Eliminate all speculation
from the markets.
Transactions, though slightly
under yesterday, exceeded the mil
lion share mark for the 18tli con
secutive session.
Principal reason given for the
decline was the recommendation
of Marriner S. Eccles, chairman of
the federal reserve board, that a
wartime excess profits tax be ap
plied to speculative gains on
stocks and real estate. However,
technical factors also played a
part since the market had risen
for eight straight sessions to new
highs for more than seven years.
Approach of (he holiday tomorrow
ulso brought in some evening up
operations.
The Eccles statement confirmed
in the Wall street mind recent ru
mors the federal reserve planned
to eliminate all margin trading.
That rumor has neither teen con
firmed or denied by the federal.

Delayed Action on
Sea Lions Asked
Ira N. Gabrlelson, director of
the U. S. fish and wildlife service,
and formerly a resident of Oregon,
has expressed a desire that the
Oregon state legislature do not
tuke any action on removal of pro
tection from sea Hons until a study
to be started In April is completed,
It was learned Here today.
A telegram was received from
Gabrielson by Robert W. Sawyer,
Bend, who, as a former member
of the stale highway commission,
in 1931 was associated with the
late George W. Sorenson, of Port
Orford, in action leading to the
removal of bounty on the large
seals.-Sawyer points out that ac
tion taken under the leadership of
Sorenson In 1931 was on the basis
of reports from the United States
biological survey, now Incorporat
ed in the fish anil wildlife service,
that sea Hons are not destructive
to commercial fish.
In the telegram received here
today, Gahrielsnn said that "data
used before regarding sea Hons
are still the best available."

Iwo Battle
(Continued from Page One)
bloody hand-to-hand struggles.
The Japanese were relatively
quiet last night. A local counter
attack on the American left flank,
supported by several tanks and
artillery fire, was beaten off, and
attempts at infiltration were
thwarted.
U. S: warships and guns sup
ported the marines throughout the
nignt, rocking the Japanese-held
part of Iwo with a ceaseless bar
rage which continued this morn
ing. .
Planes Give Aid
Carrier-borne planes swarmed
back into the battle of Iwo today,
carrying out heavy bombing and
strafing attacks.
Making It plain that the marines ;
naa come to stay, the unloading
of supplies and rations on the
beaches went on all last night.
"The Japanese are resisting des
perately, and the fighting is fierce
in some parts of the combat area,"
United Press correspondent Mac
R. Johnson reported from a war
ship off Iwo.
He said the Japanese were re
sorting to their night infiltration
tactics which has become standard
with them. One U. S. battalion
alone reported that more than 100
Japanese were killed in these at
tempts.

This annual tea, usually a colo
nial theme, is held each year on or
near Washington's birthday, the
proceeds of which go to the club's
book fund. This fund, raised by
membership fees, the annual li
brary tag day, and the tea, is used
to purchase books for the rental
shelf at the Hagedorn drug store.
When a book has paid for it
self it is placed in the library and
the fund used to purchase another.
In this way 40 books were con
tributed last year to the county
library. .
