Irregular Gain
Made By Stocks
Bm Elmer C. Wulwr
(United Preaa Financial Editor)
New York, Jan. 31 ir Stocks
made an irregular advance on cur
tnlled volume today.
Steel shares turned un and a
stable group of rails displayed i
rallying tendencies. Farm equip
ments were well up on the strong
list. Cains ranging to more than
a point were noted in some of the
rail equipments, building stocks,
automobile Issues ,and specialties.
The rail average sagged because
of a 2-point drop in Norfolk &
Western and loss of more than a
point in Louisville & Nashville. In
the aircrafts, Grumman rose
more than a point while Douglas
lost nearly 2 points. Franklin Si
mon preferred spurted 9 points,
the widest gain while Westing
house Electric preferred dropped
514 points. '
American Telephone, yester
day's weak spot, held around the
previous close late in the day after
rising more than a point from its
low. II. S. Steel rose a point from
its low and Bethlehem more than
a point, each registering fraction
al gains near closing time. Can
stocks improved with American
up more than a point.
