PAGE SIX THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON, FRIDAY. JULY 21. 1944 Airroute Plans For Bend Shown - San Francisco, July 21 (Spe cial) United Air Lines, which has applied to the Civil Aero nautics board for authority to op erate in and out of Bend, had its start in the West and has a large number of western executives on its staff, it was disclosed Thurs day by company officials. United today operates over 6,000 route miles which reach to 47 cities in 16 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. Approx imately 75 per cent of the com pany's routes are in the West. The company is the oldest airline operator in the country with a background of 18 years and more than 260 million miles of flying. United has sought to place Bend and 23 more western cities on its trunk line coast-to-coast and Pacific coast system. The applica tion was filed April 26 and is set for hearing in Washington on Oc tober 16. If granted, It will enable United to link the new cities by direct, one-carrier passenger-mail-express service with other key cities across the United States and the length of the Pacific coast. Shell Strikes His Home IS" Mrs. America Meets the War Apparently the can opener will be able to retain its importance in Mrs. America's household de spite wartime conditions. For the war production board has author ized twice as much iron and steel for the manufacture of the house told type can opener. If Mrs. Ameitea expects to wield the can opener much, she'd better get out and help the na tion's canneries pack this year's crops of fruits and vegetables. Housewives and high school boys and girls are needed to fill the manpower shortage in canneries this year. It takes more canned fruits and vegetables for fight ing men overseas than for those stationed in the United States. If you want to help in this vital food project, get in touch with the nearest United States employ ment service office. There you will learn where and when your help will be needed. II .Mill III. Division, OPA, San Mrs. America's wartime slogan of "wear it out, make it do or do without" has focused attention on ceiling prices covering repair services. For example, the dry cleaner, the cobbler, the laundry, the household appliance repair man or other service establish ments cannot charge you more than they did In March, 1942. Of course, you can't remember that far back. However, if you have any questions about the charge, ask the dealer 'about it. He is re quired to show you' his ceiling price lists, which are exact cop ies, of the lists filed with local OPA boards. And here's a peach of a price regulation for homemakers. Fresh peaches for table use are under price control for the first time. The new price ceilings mean re ductions to shoppers of an aver age of about 25 per cent below prices charged last year. Homemakers will welcome news from the war production board that a limited production of elec tric water heaters has been ap proved. Further, the war produc tion board established a new quo ta for production of non-electric water heaters. Restrictions also were removed from the manu facture or fabrication of metal jackets for water heaters. It was pointed out that metal jackets will be permitted again because paperboard proved unsatisfactory. Mrs. America, give your land lord a break and take care of his property. Because of wartime conditions, landlords are having difficulty obtaining materials and manpower to make necessary re pairs. You 11 want to get a copy of a handy booklet put out by the OPA rent control division en titled "Uncle Sam keeps your rent down You must keep your home up." It cover the "do's and don'ts of preventive maintenance." Ask for it at your local OPA rent of fice, or write the Regional In- Blood Derivative To B&Released A new blood derivative, useful in the prevention or modification of measles will soon be available, at no cost, to civilians, the Amer ican Red Cross has announced. The new product, called gamma globulin, is made possible by a newly developed process of sepa ration, and will be released by the navy for distribution under supervision of the Red Cross as the amounts available exceed the requirements of the armed forces. The new process will In no way reduce tne amount oi blood plas ma or serum albumin required for treatment of wounded serv icemen, but will rather add one more service to the long list of accomplishments in the blood donor program. By agreement with the navy, the American Red Cross, the as sociation of state and territorial health officers, and the commer cial laboratories who are doing the processing at cost, the new blood derivative will be distrib uted through state departments of health and local health authorities. The Red Cross agreement was diawn to insure that citizens in need of the measles prophylaxis may receive it at no cost, since the blood was voluntarily donated by the American people. Actual cost of preparing, bottling and distributing will be borne by the health agencies who distribute it. The gamma globulin will be available for use within 30 to 60 days, but it will be obtainable only through physicians, who, in turn, win receive it through pub lic'health agencies. It may not be obtained through the American Red Cross. , rather than an extremely hard chippy texture. Serve plain or with crushed fruit. FIRST CHRISTIAN (Fourth atreet at Newport avenue) W. I. Keeping the lee crys tals small Is the secret of smooth ness, says Elizabeth II. Boeckli, home demonstration agent. This is done by plenty of beating of the partly frozen cream, and by sta bilizers such as gelatin and eggs. The very top of the bottle of milk is thick enough to whip if allowed to stand in the refrigera tor a day or two. Take 114 cups of milk, mix with 4 cup of sugar and teaspoon of salt, and heat. Add two egg yolks Hnd cook over hot water gently until thickened. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of gelatin, which has been soaked a few min utes in 2 tnhlcspoons of milk or water by holding over hot water. Stir this into the milk mixture and cool. Add 1 teaaspoon of va nilla. Whip the egg whites and mix with the cool custard. Set refrigerator to coldest tem perature, pour about 2 table spoons of cold water where the tray will sit, pour mixture into tray and freeze. If it becomes too hard, break it up anyway, pour the partly frozen mixture into a howl and beat nulCKiy until smooth, but not melted. Before; removing the tray of tee cream, whip 1 cup of the thick cream mentioned hcfoit1, and quickly fold into the partly frozen cus tard mixture. Return to the freez ing tray with a little more cold water under the tray, which quickens the freezing process, and freeze but do not freeze too hard.
