1 Super-Fortress Details Given Chicago. Jan. 21' UDetails of the new Boeing B-29 Buper-fort-ross, which packs a bomb load of nearly nine tons for a 1000 mile flight, were revealed oublicly for the first time in a British avia tion magazine, couples of which were received by the Chicago Sun. Described by Gen. H. H. Arn old, commanding the army air forces, as a great improvement over present Flying Fortress and Liberator bombers, the B-29 mounts six gun posts, two of them operated by remote con trol. Has Chin Turret The super-fort carries a "chin" turret, as was recently mounted on the B-17G, most recent of the regular fortress line, and dorsal, ball and tall turrets. The two "waist" turrets, located on the sides of the planes and formerly manned Dy waist gunner3, are operated by remote control in the new model. Whether the new type guns would reduce the size of the regular 10 man fortress crew, and who would fire the waist guns was not revealed. According to the British maga zine "Flight." the bomb load of the B-29 is from 16,500 to 17,000 pounds for a 1000 mile range, or 6000 pounds for a 3000 mile trip. Both loads exceed the present ca pacity of the B-17G for the same distance. Unlike earlier models, the Hew super-fort has a tricycle landing gear, all wheels of which have double tires. Belgian Priest Likes His Bleak Alaskan Island Tununak, Nelson Island lfi Father Paul C. Deschout, Jesuit priest for 10 years on this bleak. little-known sea island, had as much difficulty learning the ways of the Eskimos here as they had becoming accustomed to his. When the Belgian-born priest was called to an outlying village to officiate at a funeral, he found the village elders sitting on a bench in the kashim. or men's house. He began shaking hands with them, moving along the line of skin-clad hunters, trying to gain their confidence. "I was halfway along the line of men." Father Paul relates, "when I found myself shaking hands with the dead man. They had brought him into the kashim for a last visit before he was buried." Father Paul has been off Nel son island only once in 10 years, and then he hurried back, home sick for his bleak island home, his tiny chapel, and the wild Es kimos he works, hunts and lives with. With his team of eight malemutes. the priest travels con stantly among the native villages. pinch-hitting in every capacity from midwife to reindeer herder. Today Father Paul was prepar ing for a trip to a remote village on the other side of the island. AU the men of this village were away on the reindeer round-up and four children were about to be born. The men wanted Father Paul to bring them news of their wives and offspring as soon as possible, and the women wanted him there with a medical kit. 'One thine about it," Father Paul laughed, "if the babies are all boys, I'll be the most popular messenger on Nelson Island when I return.
