II Local News Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Merchant, 550 Ogden avenue, have received word that their son, Sgt. Thomas Merchant, has arrived safely in A:ngland. Thomat is a member ol "he army air fore. Capt and Mrs. Jarvis Gould are parents of a seven-pound, one ounce daughter born Thursday morning at Fort Lewis, Wash. Capt. Gould, son of the late Rob ert B. Gould, is now with a medi cal unit stationed in Central Oregon for the current maneuver. Edna McCurdy and Wilma Fickas left this morning to spend a week's vacation visiting rela tives in Seneca. Two sisters met here in Bend this week for the first time in 14 years, when Mrs. Howard Holmes of New Meadow, Ida., came for a visit with her sister, Mrs. Cecil Holllnshead. A traveling examiner of oper ators and chauffeurs will be in Bend at the city hall Monday through Saturday next week. The examiner will be in the office di om 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. Monday lirough Friday and from 9 a. m. until noon on baturaay. AU per sons wishing permits or licenses to drive cars are asked to see the examiner. Earl R. Mosen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl G. Mosen, of Bend, is now at the naval training station at Farragut, Ida., where he is re ceiving his recruit training, Earl, a graduate of Bend high- school with the class of 1943, enlisted through the Central Oregon re cruiting station. Virginia Masterson returned to Bond Friday after visiting with her, brother. Cadet Louis C. Gel briek in King City, Calif., and relatives In San Francisco. Mr. and Mrs. James Jansen are Central Oregon visitors from Ashland. Mrs. John Helfrich of Brothers was a Bend visitor yesterday. f H. F. Peetz was In Bend yes ferday from the Horse Heaven cinnabar mine in Jefferson county. Leo J. Walgamood, navy war rant officer, will be at the navy recruiting station in Bend Mon day to interview men interested in volunteering for service in the Seabees. , - Norman D. Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. N. Nelson, 324 Dela ware avenue, has arrived at Greensboro, N. C, where he will take his basic training in the army air corps. Norman was graduated from Bend high school in 1941. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Slate have received word that their son, Ar thur L. Slate, stationed some where in the south Pacific, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant. This is the second pro motion for Sgt. Slate in two rynonths. Hemmelgarn, editor of the Madras Pioneer, was a Bend visitor Friday. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Ryan, former Bend residents, stopped here Fri day and Saturday en route to San Gabriel. Taylor, 1254 State street, $15 bail posted on charge of being drunk. Olaf O. Ror, Shevlin, charged with driving while drunk. Mclvin E. Wilcox, Carroll Acres, posted $100 bail on charge of driv ing while drunk. H. G. Rainey, Bend, posted $7.50 on cnarges oi parking violations. Traffic Charge Brings $10 Fine Olof Olof sson Ror, Shevlin, was cited in Justice' court this morning before Justice of the Peace Wil son George on charges of driving while drunk. Ror was fined $100 and his driver's license was sus pended for one year. In addition to these penalties, under the new slate financial responsibility law it will be necessary for him to transfer the title of his oar or have it taken over within 10 days. 1 State police arrested Ror at 1:05 Saturday morning, on highway 97 between 1st and 2nd streets in Bend. Federal Trailer Site About Ready The federal trailer project at South Fourth street and Roosevelt avenue will open on Monday, final work on the camp having been completed this week. Miss Signe Peterson, federal public housing agency representa tive, is in Bend from Seattle mak ing arrangements for the hiring of a staff to operate the 76-unit project. All of the living trailers are now In their permanent locations. Walks In the camp have been cin dered and a large parking lot on fourth street and the access road on Roosevelt avenue from the high way have also been cindered to keep down dust. Mackenzie King." - Communique Issued A naval communique issued sim ultaneously in Quebec City and Washington said: "A task force of the Pacific fleet has landed a force of United States and Canadian troops on, Kiska beginning on August 15. No Japanese have been found. There were indications of recent hasty evacuation of the Japanese garri son. Presumably the heavy bom bardments , by our 1 ships and planes that have been carried on for some time and the danger to their supply lines by our capture of Attn made the enemy positions on Kiska untenable. It Is not known how the Japanese got away bat is Is possible that enemy surface ships were able to reacn Kiska under cover of the heavy fog that has been prevalent. "Since the air and surface bom bardments In the latter part of July had apparently destroyed Japanese radio equipment on Kis ka the assumption was that they were not in communication with the homeland. Consequently no release of allied operations against Kiska has been made since July 31st as It would have conveyed information to the ene my which he otherwise would not have had. Earlier reports from the con ference between Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill had Indicated that some action on the Japanese front could be ex pected. Heavy naval and air ac tion in the Pacific against the Japanese fleet was believed to be one of the major military de cisions reached at the conference. Kristin Hemingway Gets Island Gift A package from the south sea islands arrived In Bend today ad dressed to Miss Kristin Heming way. It was from the little girl's 1 father, Major Max Hemingway, with the American forces In the southwest Pacific theater of war, and contained a native grass skirt, shell necklace and other articles worn hy Islanders. Previously, Major Hemingway sent hi; son, Richie, a piece of a wrecked Jap anese plane. Mrs. Hemingway Is making her home In Bend while her husband Is In the -service. NOTICE! Aug. 21 Donald. 11 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wal ter Johnson, of near Deschutes, was injured this morning when he was struck and run over by a irucn on oixin street nere. Donald was taken immediately to the Medical-Dental clinic where X-rays revealed ' that no bones were broken. The boy was bruis ed severely, however, and is be ing kept at the clinic for observa tion. The rear wheel of the truck, reported to have been an army vehicle, passed over the pelvic region of the boy's body. tne anver or the truck, whose name is not available, is reported to have stopped at the scene of the accident and to have fully co operated wicn officers in the in vestigation which followed. According to local officers, it was the first serious accident to occur in Redmond in over two years.
