PAGE TWO THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON, THURSDAY, JANUARY 21, 1943 Bruins Will Try To Break Jinx of Longstanding Los Angefes Squad Has Failed to Beat Trojans In 40 Different Games By List fchoetnmftkrr (Umu-d i'rM 3t.fl GorrHMilnt) Los Angeles, Jan. 21 ilT Way back on Feb. 13, 1933, the Bruins from the University ol California at Los Angeles defeated the Tro jans from the University of Southern California in a basket ball game, 36-24. And that takes care of that! In 40 attempts since that mem orable date the Bruins have made both spectacular and miserable' attempts to accomplish the feat again, but In every case the Tro jans slammed the door in their faces. Two years ago hysterical Bruin rotters thought they'd at last reached the promised land when their cross-town rivals trailed 44 33 at half time. Game Lost But the U.S.C caRcmen, un doubtedly recipients of a strenu ous "Shall we say lecture came back in the last stanza to tie the game up at 45 all in the regular time and went on to win in the overtime period, 53-47. Other games in the series! weren't as close. The Trojans captured No. 25 by a 69-36 tally and won No. 30 with a 60-26 tri umph which must be some sore of intercollegiate cage record. That brings the rivalry up to date and tomorrow night the Bruins hopefully engage the Tro jans in No. 41, but the tea leaves in the cup don't forecast a Bruin victory even if the law of aver ages is taking a trouncing. Led by little Gene Rock, a 5 ' foot, 9 inch junior weighing 150 pounds, the men from Troy once more figure to hang another Bruin hide on the pennant wall. Bock High Scorer Rock, Coach Ernie Holbrook's' "little giant," has been the Tro jan high scorer. In 14 games he has scored 175 points for an aver age of 12.5 points per game and has been the top Trojan point man In seven of the 14 tilts. Holbrook says he's send his Tro jans out there with orders to out-; shoot the Bruins rather than con centrate on an airtight defense. "My front line of Kock, Alex . Omalev, and Jim Seminoff has averaged 43.8 points- per game, which is more than 15 points greater than tHe average of the. Bruins' four frontllners," master minds Holbrook. Out Our Way By J. R. I Schedules Ready For Major Nines New York, Jan. 21 lPi The major league baseball schedules for 1943 awaited only final ratifi cation from the two circuits' in dividual owners today plus a last minute checkup by President Ford Flick of the National and William Harridge of the American league. Frick and Harridge met yester day to go over the program, a get together made necessary by a change of the opening date to April 21 and a setback of the clos ing date to Oct. 3. They made only one new move changing date of the all-star game at Philadelphia from July 7 to July is. Several innovations have come out of the new schedule, which has cut baseball travel to three intersectional trips and saved 65,- 000 league travel miles. Because of the juggling of dates, both big holidays Memorial and Inde pendence )ay will find intersec tional games scneauiea. Closing day will also feature the same setup. That is an arrangement without precedent in baseball an nals as eastern and western clubs formerly played among them selves on those dates. Washington opens the season on April 20, playing the Philadel phia Athletics at home. The next day in the American league, will send Washington to New York, Boston to Philadelphia, Chicago to St. Louis and Detroit, to Cleve land. In the National league, opening day will put New York against Brooklyn, Philadelphia at Boston, St Louis at Cincinnati and Pitts burgh at Chicago. Buy National War Bonds Now! Bowling Notes . I.EDYARD, PI.ANTF.K OF AN IDEA One of the most valuable con tributions to the advancement of mankind Is an Idea. It was John Ledyard who planted un idea ill the fertile mind of Thomas Jef ferson which resulted In the Lewis and Clark expedition and the ultimate acquisition of the Pacific coast bv the I'nited States of America. Ledyard was a rover hy nature.-He sailed with Captain James Cook as corporal o( ma rines on the ship "Resolution" In 1776, to the northwest coast of America. It was on that cruise that Ledyard sensed the givat possibilities of that vast, unex plored region. In 17S2, Ledyard was back In America on board a British man o' war. Leaving the British ser vice, he endeavored to interest American capital In a trailing and exploring expedition to the northwest coast. Failing In this, he sailed for France in 171. There he met Thomas Jefferson and John Paul Jones to whom he sold the idea of the possibilities of the northwest coast of Am erica. However, funds failed to matcrialiA' to outfit an expedi tion, so Ledyard resolved to start hy land through France and Russia and across the Bering strait to America. While at Yakutsk waiting for the weather to abate, he was ar rested as a spy and taken to Moscow. Acquitted of the spy charge, he hastened to l.ondnn where he was offered the leader ship of an expedition to explore Africa. Ledyard arrived in Cairo, Egypt on Aug. 19, 17K8. His last letter to Thomas Jefferson was on Nov. 15, with America ever in mind. Just before the expedition was to start. Ledyard died at the early age of 38, w ith his hopes still un realized. Like most pioneers, Ledyard profited nothing by his hold ven tures and his great privations, but he left the germ of an idea with Thomas Jefferson which bore abundant fruit in the years to come.
