PAGE TWO League Races Move Past Mid Season Points Yanks Hold Seven Game Lead in American With Dodgers Barely Ahead New York, July 21 ill" True to tradition, the American leaRue race is developing Into a runaway and the National league race Is beginning to tlRhten up for a red hot September finish. Back from the west after one of their greatest road trips in years, the Yanks hold a commanding seven-game lead over the second place Indians. From all appearanc es the Yanks are going to win it in a Cakewalk. Only Bob Feller is saving the Indians from complete rout. The Red Sox. hit hard by in juries to Ted Williams and Jim Tabor, have shot their bolt. But in the National league there Is an entirely different picture. The Dodgers are finding the pace maker's role difficult and their lead has melted to a game and a half. The Cardinals came out cf a five-game slump with a bang and are knocking again at the door. In fourth place, only .002 points out of third, the Reds are making ges tures indicating that they are go ing to make a spirited bid to battle thf 'r way back into the flag chase. Cincinnati closed its eastern swing with seven victories and four de feats and, although 104 games off the pace, can still make trouble if the hitting improves. But the baseball story of July is the Yanks' marauding march thmimh lha utact fliirina u-hiih they won 11 games and lost only two. They put the crusher on the Indians by taking an important series, two games to one, losing only to Bob Feller in rain and mud. They wound up their trip yesterday "by winning a 17-inning thriller from the Tigers, 12-6. Twice the Tigers tied the score, 4-4 and 6-6, but in the 17th Keller and Henrich hit homers to pace a six-run rallv. It was No. 22 fori Keller and No. 17 for Henrich. Joe PiMaggio clouted out four hits, three doubles and homer No. 21. Cleveland lost ground by divid ing with the Senators. Steve Sun- j dra stopped me Trine, in me opener, featuring a two-run triple by Vernon and a two-run homer by Bloodworth. Jim Bagby pitched the Indians to a 5-1 victory in the nightcap. The Browns put the slug on the Red Sox twice, 6-3 and 10-0, and extended their winning streak lo lour in a row, their longest of the season. It was the Brownies sev enth win in eight games.
