"I am certainly sorry to learn of , the death of your husband." states the writer of the unsigned letter accompanying the $10 gift. "I trust and believe that he died in the faith. 1 If he died as he had lived when I knew him, we will all meet in a better world. Accept this little pres ent in appreciation for kindness shown me when I used to stop at your place. fo which you never made any charge. The letter bore a Kansas City, Mo., postmark and held two clippings tliat touched on the "angel's" activities in other parts of the country. In Ava, Mo one cli oping stated, four per sons in one week received $450. Three of them were former mer chants and the fourth was the widow of a former merchant. Apparently all funds distributed by the "angel" originate in Kansas City. In Springfield, Mo., the mys terious benefactor recently made gifts totaling $1200. and paid off a mortgage on the American Legion home. Mrs. Piland's address was appar ently obtained through a request printed in the Douglas County Her ald of Ava. Mo. The letter, from Kansas City, was to the editor, and asked for the "correct present ad dres of five people, one of whom was the late Monroe Piland of Bend, for merly of Thorn field. Mo.
