Scharf Speaks John Scharf, superintendent of the Malheur wildlife refuge, was the guest speaker, with conservation as his topic. The Malheur refuge, prob ably the most important of Its kind on the continent, now holds 160,000 acres, Scharf said. A total of 214 species of birds are represented at the refuge, and 122 of these are nest ing species. Banding and other studies carried on at the refuge were mentioned by Scharf in answering questions. One topic which proved contro versial as the sportsmen took idej was that dealing with open teason on does. Members of a Harney county delegation were critical of the Mur derers creek doe season and charged that over population studies had been deliberately faked. Brown man euvered the dicussion out of the field of controversy by suggesting the appointment of a committee. Speakers who touched on various phases of wild life and fishing in cluded Ralph Kaiser of Maupin, M. A. Lynch, former member of the state game commisison and Dr. V. S, Howard of Madras.
