C Sport Parade By Henry M-Ieiiiarc Mfiltl lr Klair Oorril''inWit) New York, Nov. 21 HJi-If they haven't run out of Nobel prizes by this lime we would like to urje thut one be given to Mr. Harry (Handle Bar) Mendel for what is surely the most humanitarian net of the year. Out of the kindness of his heart, which must throb like a hangover head for all mankind, Mr. Mendel haH created the five-day six-day bi cycle race. It began in Madison Square Garden last night, and while it is being advert ined as a six-day race it will actually last but five. Should Mr, Mendel be given a prize there is the chance that the recognition of his services would spur him on to even greater deeds. Who knows but that next year he would promote a four-day bix-duy race, and the year after that a three day six-day race? And then ah! How sweet to even dream of it he might continue reducing the event until nothing would be left but a one-second six-duv race A one-second six-ctay race would be ideal. Il would be a money-making thing, too. We know thousands of persoas who would pay their money to see it if they knew it would end almost instantaneously. The one thing that prevented six-day bike racing from sweeping the country is that its name was on the level. As a patriot we would be the last to say that this country hasn't as many gluttons for punishment as any other nation. But no nation has enough of that breed to support a sport that starts on a Sunday and can't be stopped, even bv the police, until the following Saturday. Now that Promoter Mendel has taken the first step in shortening sports events that take up too much time, we hope the operators ot other such events will follow his lead. That track event, the marathon, could be reduced by 15 or 20 miles thout nurture anv feelings, unless you count the feelings of marathon runners themselves, and we don't. There is nothing much duller than the first three hours of a marathon, as the hardy oafs wear out their fe-.i and the patience of the folk awaiting for them at the finish line. Besides cleaning uo the grounds around the ski hut and removing two old wrecks from the vicinity, Myron Symons crew rolled and leveled the skating rink to the smoothness of a billiard table. On the ski hill Chris Kostol directed the construction of a small jump which will permit leaps up to an estimated 80 feet in distance. Despite the progress made in the ski area, some work remains to be done, and Skyliners are being asked to turn out next Sunday to assist in clearing on the slalom hill. Boy Accosts Two Girls And Lands in Harbor Boston UP) Social arbiters might frown on this method, but James Smith, 15, certainly has learned not to speak to strange girls.
