Conference Tuesday, " . 100 Attending HRedmond, Sept. 21 The annual convention of the Deschutes county ViG. T, U. will be held in Redmond Fuday, September 22. Sessions will he held both morning and afternoon, with a potluck dinner at noon, ac cording to Mrs. S. S. Martin, county president. Ue morning session will begin with, devotionals at the Baptist church at 10 a. m. At 1130, Rev. Stew art Bain of the Baptist church will speak on "World Events in the Light of God's Word." The afternoon ses sion will begin at 2 p. mand will be held at the Christian church. Talks by leaders in the local W. C. T. U. movement will be given, and there will -be an address by Mrs. Lois Huusch, formerly of Prineville, who wiff tell of her experiences during the past two years in China. BAPTISTS CONVENE 4)edmond, Sept. 21 The annual ftSchutes Baptist association met in Redmond Tuesday, with more than 100 delegates and visitors present from churches at Bend, Prineville, Burns, Grass Valley, and Redmond. Aa. all day session was held, with potluck dinner at noon. Principal speakers of the day were Dr. F. W. Starring of Portland, state seccetary of the association, and Rev. Dickson, a missionary from Central Atnerica, who told of his work at Sgn Salvador. I CHARLES a FOSTER DIES Redmond, Sept 21 Funeral ser vices for Charles H. Foster, who died Aonday at the age of 88, will be held in, Kcamona t naay at z p. m. from the Baptist church, with Rev. Stew art Bam m charge of the services. 2vlr. Foster, who was born Illinois, came to the Santiam country ill 1881, where he established the upper Soda springs resort. He oper ated this until 1900, when he moved to Sisters. For several years he had been living with a son, R. C. Foster, at-Camp Sherman. He would have been 89 on the tenth of October. He is survived by three sons, H. A. Foster of Prineville; Lewis D. Foster of-Redmond, and R. C. Foster of Camp Sherman; and by three daugh ters, Mrs. Mary Frost of Fort Johns, California; Mrs. C. L. Henson of Red mond,, and Mrs. Vern Pressor of Blaine. THE BEND Elks Still Trying to Arrange Playoff The problem of deciding the sec ond half winner of the Oregon State baseball league season remained un solved today, with league officials joining Silverton in saying that the deciding game should oe played in Portland, referred to as a Tieutrnl ground. However, Bend Elk offl clals do not consider Portland "neu tral, inasmuch as practically the entire Silverton team is now in Port land. The Flks also say it would cost the team and ball players money to go into Portland. Bend would like to play on some state league diamond, in either Hills Creek or Albanv. but this has not met with the approval of either Sil verton or the league chiefs. The game must be played this coming Sunday. Bend last Sunday defeated Silverton 6 to S, to earn a second half tie. Tax Turnover Is Made to Deschutes Treasurer Tax collections for f ivc years total ling $22,676.42 made by R. I. Hamby, deputy sheriff in the tax collectors office, were turned over yesterday to Miss Ruth M. shearer, county treas urer. The total included $516.04 in terest. The turnover for each year was $18,890.54, 1939; $914.20, 1938; $1,133.26. 1937; $905.85. 1936; and ?832.57, 1932. The iota! was distributed as fol lows: $3,053.65, county general fund; $88.17, state tax; $682.73, elementary school; $5.31, market roadr $35.40, road bond ' sinking and interest; $164.96, road district No. 3; $81.77, public library; $3.26, public library contingency; $5,904.21, city of Bend; $649.41, city of Redmond; $19.34. MAJOR LEAGUES New York, Sept. 21 lUNThe Cin cinnati Reds, it became increasingly apparent today under the pressure of the September stretch drive, are two different kinds of a ball club. They are verv good when Bucky Walters or Paul Derringer is on the pitching mound. They are very bad when anybody else pitches. , Walters was in the box yesterday, and they beat the Philies, 3-2, and preserved their 22 game National league lead. As horrible as the Reds were when the Phils slugged them, 13-1, Tuesday, they played clean. errorles ball yesterday and three times came from behind to enable Walters to win his 26th game. Walters himself scored the winning tally in the ninth. In scoring his 26th wm waiters hung up his fifth straight and went the route for the 29th time in 33 starts. With Derringer following Walters to the mound today, the Reds' case is slightly improved. The Yanks scored their 101st vic tory, defeating the White Sox, 8-4. Steve Sundra won his 11th straight. Frank Hayes' triple in the 13th enabled the Athletics to nose out the Tigers, 5-4. He scored by beating Hank Grecnberg s throw to the plate after Gantenbein's grounder. The Browns slugged out 22 hits, but -it took them 16 innings to beat the Red Sox. 11-8. Hoag, McQuinn, and Gallagher each made four hits. The Browns drove Lefty Grove to cover in the eighth, but Ostcrmucllcr was charged with the loss. San Francisco, Sept. 21 U" Hazel Cunningham, who drinks chafnpagnc while she swims, claimed a world record for a six-mile course today after swimming from San Francisco to Treasure island in one hour and 55 minutes. She was forced to swim more than twice the actual distance to the island by tidal currents which carried her towards Alcatraz island.
