Z- New hinhs were made by Com- -mon wealth Edison and Engineers "Public Service 5 per cent preferred. .Public Service of New Jersey was up ' -a point and Detroit edison nearly 2 -points. Steel shares, down more than a "point in early trading, recovered part -of the losses. Automobile stocks dis ' played firmness. Rails and coppers were steady. Mercantile issues lm- Droved. American Can gained 2 points on a -few sales and Continental Can was "up more than a point. Dow Chemical .was .up 2 points. Gains of a point or -more were noted in Celanese, Howe - Sound, Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass land J. C. Penney. . Loft featured in activity and rose -Vi point United Air Lines was ac tive -and moderate valume came into General Motors, U. S. Rubber and -Chrysler, - St. Joseph lead lost more that a point and smaller declines were .noted in Douglas Aircraft, Boeing - '-Airplane, American Smelting, Union TCarbide, Phillips Petroleum and -Pennsylvania Railroad. Inland Steel ;lost Hi. Z- The market ran into moderate profit-taking on the rally and some leaders receded from the tops. Bonds were firm. Cotton strength ened after an early decline. Wheat lost fractions to a cent a bushel. Business news continued favorable.
