Therefore, they fchould be planted in this closed area, either well up towards the source, or well up Lake creek. When planted (town lower, towards the canyon. tneir cnnnces ol survival are lessened considerably, as they are more open to attacks by the D.illy Varden, and subject to the force of the swifter water. Hatchery site There are several excellent places for a hatchery on or Hear the Metolius river, because of the abundance of springs that arc found. The main objection to a hatrh pVy in this area is the coldnefs of the water. ' Holding area The sportsmen in this area have discussed among Ihem felves the possibility of screening off the mouth of Lake creek and using this creek as a holding pond for the small fish until they have reached a larger size, and then letting them out from time to time into the main stream. If fish of proper size can be obtained from hatcheries and care fully planted, holding ponds are not recommended. i Poaching in the closed area ac cording to residents along the stream, there is quite a little illegal fishing in this closed area. Some violators are probably unaware that they are fish ing in a closed section until someone calls their attention to it. " Traps Three traps have been in stalled for the purpose of catching the Dolly Vardens and removing them from the stream to prevent their preying on the other fish. These have been put in Canyon creek. Jack creek and Lake creek. The day before we left, we went to the trap on Jack creek and found three fish in it. Large boul ders and nutjutting rocks wore left in Ihe trap, and log along the edge of it provides an excellent hiding Place lor the turn. We tried lo work them out with a pitchfork, but could not locale Ihem as they disappeared into some crevice. This trap should have all of Ihe big rooks removed from il and all hiding places removed so as to facili tate removal of the fish. It would be well to put a board flooring in it. The other two traps are easier lo work in but here aiMin there is no check to see what betximes of the fish that are cauaht. Thev are so easily accessible that most anyone can go to them and remove the fish. Some check should be made on the . 1 V. . I r .1. . . number of fish taken from the traps, and the species ot the fish taken. II just the Uollv Vardens are re moved from the stream, the Irons are prohablv beneficial but if other more desirable fish are also removed, then they arc defeating their own purpose. It seerns that some method of close regulation is needed to make these traps really effective. One person should be appointed to visit all of the traps during the time they are in operation. Fishing law The season mav be too long for the best interests of the stream. Perhaps tf the opening date were held up in the spring, until the j time when most of the other streams and lakes were accessible, a good part j of the fishing drain would be re-I moved. A later opening date would I also give the fish a better chance to spawn. The closing dute should be set bark to immediately alter Labor day, which is practically the end of the tourist season. Stocking Program H. S. Davis makes the following statement rela tive to the sue of fish to be planted, In waters which are heavily fished. and in which the great majority of tiuuu uuui miv iriuuvtM, ii ia sory to stock with legal-size trout at various intervals during the season in order to maintain the fishing- There is no Question but what the Metolius river is heavily fished, and i perhaps Mr. Davis suggestion would t be the answer to the problem; but it j would be an expensive procedure, and one which the state of Oregon, j at the present time, could not afford ' to carry out. j According to the table which has been prepared, fish are to be stocked in this stream and tributaries on the! basis of pools, shelter and food avail- i able. The table is based on plantings of three-inch rainbow trout. If smaller fish are planted, a larger number will be released; and if larger fish are available, fewer need be planted. DRUGS. survey, th upper Metolius and lis tributaries were stocked with 241,100 rainbows, during the latier part of October, under the supervision ol Dr. Griffiths and Mr. Hollowny. In order to compeiLsate for the fish lxmg smaller than three Inches in lonnlli. a larger number ihun the reunited 162,000 were planted. Threw fish, running from 1.26 lo 3 im-hes in length, were obtained from ihe Oak Springs hatchery. Two holding pens were built and placed in the stream at easily acces sible locations to receive the fish and hold them until they could be dis tributed by milk cans and pack cans. Of ihe six loads of fish that were re ceived, two of these were liberated directly into Die Metolius and lis tributaries -from the trucks, these fish being scattered as well as could L. i i... . iL. be done by approaching the streams at as many placns as was possible. The other four loads were weighed from the trucks and placed in the holding pens, from which they were again weighed before final distribu tion. The fish placed in the holding pens were later placed in ten-gallon milk cans and five-gallon back-pack cans, by which they were thoroughly dis tributed throughout the entire sur veyed section of the Metolius river, and the tributary streams. Every effort was made to place the fish in the best possible location where they could get the maximum amount of food, cover and protection from en emies. As most of the tributaries and a good portion of the main stream are readily accessible by roads, it wits quite easy to distribute the iish to the most advantageous spots. The pack cans were used in exses where the streams could not be reached by road. Excellent cooperation was received from all agancies concerned and the project was completed at a minimum (of effort and expense.
