Less than two weeks ago three Ore
gon convicts left tho penitentiary m
Salem. The price of their freedom
was the lives of two guards, and of
fellow convict who had helped plot
the escape. Hunted like beasts,
every man's hand ngainst them, a "
price upon their heads thtf was thejceles, 4t!
sort of freedom bought with the aminer;
death of Oregon Jones and Guards
Holman and Sweeney.
Hut the brief taste of liberty which
Tom Murray. Ellsworth Kelly, and
James WHtos gained was not paid
for in full. It will not be until the
three are cut down from the gallows
and the prison physician officially
announces them dead.
This will be the payment which the
law exacts, and today in three soli
tary cells the returned prisoners
await the time when the noose will
be adjusted and the trap sprung be
neath their feet.
A few scant days of freedom for
this.
It is not our purpose to gloat over
these men. doomed by their own
acts. Their race is nearly run. What
good to ask them. "Does it pay"?
But to some there is the element
of romance about all this sordid epi
sode. Murry and his followers win
actual admiration for eluding the
posses that swarmed the Waldo hills,
gain sympathy because their capture
was effected through treachery. In
the eyes of impressionable folk three
bloodthirsty outlaws became heroes.
"I was hoping they'd get away", is
a remark you may hear right here in
Bend, and from highly respectahle
people, too.
Granted, the exploit had its spec
tacular features, but nothing that re-1
quired any high order of intellect.
The fact that the attempt was made
in the first place by men not im
prisoned for capital crimes is more j
an Indication of low mentality, i
Bravery? Yes. the desperation of the
cornered rat. and the rat's scurrying
flight when once the danger becomes
a little less pressing.
But let those who must give the
emotions free rein for a moment;
glorify Murray. Kelly and WtHos Into
high minded, courageous rebels
against an oppressive, misunder
stand. rig order of society.
Then. let them stop and really
think for a moment let them pic-1
tures the three graves which marked ,
the beginning of the adventure, let i
them picture the three more whirh
will mark the end. let them picture
