of the middle west, which has suf
fered from terrific heat for the past
Jew days. New high records were
established in some sections.
The northwest reported a total of
31 heat deaths during the past six
days. In Chicago two died during
the past 24 hours. Detroit also re
ported two deaths, and single fatali
ties were reported from many cities.
In Nebraska the thermometer
holled up to a high of 108 H degrees.
TTMs was at O'Neill, with North Platte
registering 107 and Grand Island

Bend's holiest weather since June
2 came this afternoon when the
mercury in the official thermometer
rose to D.I degrees, overruling the
mandates of clouds which had over
cast the sky since early morning. A
thunderstorm with a trace of rain,
however, had lowered the heat to 89
degrees at :! o clock.
Apparently the heat was excessive,
but this was due in no small degree
to the unusual humidity rate.
It waa the first time thbt month
that a temperature In excess of 90
degrees had been reached.
