Collectors come to me with hills for groceries ami hata ami pills; it Is a painful thing to think that 1 must tlijr the hard earned chink. It is a ghastly Ehiqg to pay the sail old bills of yesterday, to pay out silver coins and brass that I would like to blow for BM. My tired old heart feels sick and sore when come collectors to my door, and for a moment brief, perchance, there is some hauteur in my glance. It always gives rne joyous thrills." I take the bills with bows ana becks, and write my pink and purple checks, ami pay the bill of every toff, and wear the smile that won't come off. The glad' collectors go their ways, and everywhere they give me praise. "If all the people." they observe, "would emulate his graceful curve, ami hand out wads of hard earned mon as though they thought the process fun. without a rumble of distress, our lives would be a irrantl success." Hut stores of men look bleak and jrray when they are called upon to pay: they gnash their teeth ami wag their ears anil shed some plain and fancy tears, and thereby gain unpleasant fame as being pikers in the game. THE OPTIMIST ON KOADS In u recent issue of The Dalles Optimist we find ItiterestltiK com ment on auto tourist camps and The Dalles-California highway. The Op timist believes, as we all do. that as soon as that highway is finished there will be a tremendous increase In the number of cars using it. 4t present, because of its Incomplete state, only a few come over it. Vheli the time comes there will he need of greatly increased camp facilities, the Optimist points out. Presum ably these will develop at they have developed along the Pacific highway i and elsewhere. At any rate they will not be created by the cities along the way. Hight on the matter of camps the Optimist is as wrong as it can be in respect to the completion of the- hlghway. The Optimist says: "Tourist travel from the east has I steadily increased, but when the road through to Klamath Falls is as good as the road from The Dalles to liend. it is going lo double. The Dallas and Hend will be stopping points for; this heavy travel. aYtd will have a problem in taking care of it. What would either of these communities do at present if a thousand cars de sired to slop over night. "Bend and The Dalles should get together on this road problem, and do all In their power to secure Its early completion. Bend has been In terested In the completion of the McKenzie pass route, a road of great Importance to Central Oregon and the whole state, but they have been overlooking a bet in not bending every effort to the finishing of the southern route." Yes, Hend has been interested in the completion of the McKenzie high way but it has been even more in terested in The Dalles-California anil especial efforts have been put forth to secure its completion. No bets have been overlooked. It is the Op timist that has overlooked the bet in not making sure of its facts before talking about this road.
