It is difficult to un derstand why there has been any un willingness to do this. That, how ever, is no longer a matter of impor tance. The companies have now agreed and are putting out the no ticca. Cigarette fimokers. we are told, find in each package they buy a neat ly printed slip urging caution while in the woods. It is hard to estimate the publicity value of this action. Internal rev enue records indicate a tremendous increase in the annual consumption of cigarettes, meaning, of course, that more people are using thera than evt r before. A great number is therefore having the warning placed before them ulmost dally. It would be a mistake to suppose that because a long effort has been mude to secure this action or because there Is satisfaction in reaching so many people the cigarette is believed to he the chief offender in causing forest fire. There are many other . causes. The cigarette Is merely one of the contributors to the annual total of man caused forest loss and the notice in the package is one way of dealing with It.
