WHAT IS A HICK TOWN?
What la a hick town?
Not long ago the Salem Capital
Journal defined a hick town in a
matter of seven paragraph! that have
been reprinted pretty generally ill
.over the state. In nearly every case
It was suggested that the reader
might test his own town. We make
the same suggestion. From certain
evidence, particularly what is said
about autos parking in reverse, we
are led to believe that the Journal's
own home town was the one .In the
editor's mind when he wrote these
paragraphs, but one must agree that
there are many others that qualify In
one way or another.
The Journal Vays:
"A hick tow-n is one that permits
a passing show to stretch an adver
tising banner across Main street a
free publicity stunt denied the tax
paytng merchant, and giving a Jay
look to the burg.
"A hick town is one that sanctions
the distribution of dodgers and hand
bills to strew the streets of the busi
ness sections, pester the pedestrian,
acare the horses and litter the autos.
"A hick town is one that turns
over a section of the heel city streets
to that itinerant aggregation of
freaks, fakirs, and fol-de-rols for
feeble minded.-. called a carnival, to
bamboozle the boobs for a small !
handout for some local uplift.
"A hick town is one where resl-1
dents are so lacking in personal and !
community pride that they fall to
water and mow the lawn, grass goes
to seed on curbings and vacant lots

kept weeds.
"A hick town is one where the
autos park in reverse, back side to.
Instead of heading in. where Ihvy

makes me weep, for I am fat ami spavined in my off hind
knee; and kindly men. perceiving that, soon bring my kolly
back to me. Whenever 1 am steeped in grief, whenever 1
have woes to burn, iny friends bring solace and relief, and
see my winning smiles return ; and of all dunces I'd bo chief
if lessons fine 1 failed to learn. My faith in mankind is
restored by some now kindness, every day j my neighbors
always can afford to lay their own concerns away, to come
and cheer me when I'm bored, inspiring me to romp and
play.
