INKS Not no long ago there ivas some cdfttrial mention about the owner ship of that majestic skyline wbtcb forms the western horizon of I'entra! Oregon. We conceded that the sky line was big enough fof all and that ownership was a relative thing -it was Rends skyline in Ilend and lied mond's skyline in ledmond. Now that the ownership is defi nitely settled and we refer to thel Serruted western horizon in news ar ticles as the "mid state" skyline, we are wondering if we should allow the matter to res! at that probably never mentioning it again until some eatarlysm of nature, such us that which ruined the hypothesized Mount Multnomah, so disturbs the Alpine canary thut doubt as to the owner ship of the shattered peaks again arises. After giving the matter serious consideration, and noting that other j claimants of the snow mantled moun-! tains are evidently content to know that the skyline is theirs as well as , Bend's, in a very timid manner, like a Junior partner making a suggestion to a gruff senior member of the firm, we make a plea thut the skyline be used for something other than a mere horizon. Movie producers are said to take their troupes to fur places to secure suitable settings. V7iy go two or three states distant from California for locale when extensive snpwftelils cn be found In Central Orvcofr In July and August? Why go to British Columbia when snow cliffs 40 feet high can be filmed in the mid state Cascades? Why seek the scenery of the Canadian rocklea when here in Central Oregon can be located access Ible glaciers, such as those on pictur esque Broken Top and the Three Sis ters? Yby search for badlands when such a place as the McKenzie pass lava beds "the devil's cinder box" can be reached over a modern highway? jt us itmittiy suggest to our part ners in the ownership of the mid state skyline that, when The Dalles Callfornla highway is completed, an Invitation be extended to the Holly wood folk to visit the snow capped mountains of Central Oregon, part of a land where summer and winter dwell only a few mites apart. LONG 1.1 PE The span of Ufa incrawMa, the learned physicians cry: and voters and their nieces arc not so apt to die; for science, health's defender, has made old ills surrender, some triumph, in its splefhdor, each morninir greets the eye. The future generation will live two hundred years, as from the happy nations the microbe disappears: fair science daily seizes a bunch of dread diseases, from them the life she squeezes, ami lays them on their biers. She says, in lan iruayre weighty, Strange things will soon be seeitj when sprightly lads of eighty will gambol on the green, ami vrirls of ninety summers will vamp the village plumbers such prophecies are hummers, and will come true, 1 ween. Rut there's the Hook that teaches this lesson to all men, that one is through who reaches his throe score years ami ten; he may hang on a little, and sit around and whittle, with aching bones anil brittle, but he's a relic then. This long estab lished limit will doubtless always hold, though does may try to trim it, or stretch it manifold; we'll live the term ac corded, with noble aims or sortlid. and then we'll be re warded with sleep as goot! as gold. Why should we wish to tarry when rest is what we need? Why should we ask to carry our burdens till we bleed'.' To see eld things paraded when all their bloom is faded, and we are .-tale and jaded, from all illusions free? rCHUHCII 1 lit si ll.ipiiM ( Inn oh The How ntow it i lum li Sunday vhool at 9:46; there Is a department, a class and a teacher awaiting you.
