THURSDAY, AUGUST 10, 1922 BIBLE THOUGHT FOR TODAY THE OMNISCIENT GUIDE: The steps of a good man are ord ered by the Lord. Psalm 37: 23. HOW TO GET ON: Ask. and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall And. Matthew 7: 7. LETTER AND SPIRIT - Portland papers report that Bishop Robert L. Paddock of the Episcopal church, who has been suffering from a nervous breakdown, is to resign his position. Charges that he has failed to wear church robes at services have worried him so as to cause his illness and he will leave his work. It seems Impossible in this day of general religious breadth and tolera tion that any such charges as those mentioned could be brought against a churchman. . If it is a fact and If Bishop Paddock Is to be "tried" for soma breach of a rule of dress, may the Lord help the church. It needs it. ; There were no rules as to what a follower of Christ should wear 1900 years .ago. Bishop Paddock has worked in Central Oregon as a Chris tian minister. He has been a true disciple and follower of the Master. We believe that he has felt the work he did more important than what he wore while doing it. Now he is a victim of the wolves who are always banging about seeking whom they may devour. We are wholly unfamiliar with the rules of dress established for Epis copal clergymen, and indeed, those of any other church, but it seems strange that one's Christianity should be tested by his clothes. Here is a good time- to remember that the let ter killeth while the spirit giveth life. . That no real citizen takes a real interest in his city until be does something for it. Do your bit. That the limit of the amount of business a. merchant can do is gov erned to " a great extent by the amount of newspaper advertising he j uses. j That you should get acquainted with your neighbors. You might like them! j That you should pity the blind and ; foolish pessimists of your city. j That every city should clean up and keep clean. That your board of commerce is i your community's "guiding light." That you should never forget the, importance of the various industries I that make your city, and never lose! an opportunity to encourage and as- slat them in their growth and the welfare of all who live and work in your city. That you should look upon your I competitors in business as friends with equal rights and privileges. 1 That the value of your board of commerce to the business growth of your city Is becoming increasingly valuable and indispensable to your best interests. Stop To Think? (Spp)tri$Rhi)ntos OSTENTATION I load my aunts with precious stones, I hang rich furs upon their bones, and send them through the town; "The fact that I am heeled," I say, "with coin enough to load a dray, must have a wide renown. I represent the newly rich, and having clambered down from the ditch up to a high estate, I want the whole blamed world to know that I have every kind of dough put down in keg and crate." My house tis like a large hotel, and in it stately footmen dwell, a butler from abroad; with jeweled tools I swat" the flies and all is done to advertise the fact that I've a wad. My socks vare brought from far-off France, and London tailors make my pance, my neckties come from Rome ; and yet, with splendor all around, I heave a sort of doleful sound, as I sit in my home. For all my efforts don't impress my mossback neighbors, I confess, and hence my weary sigh; those neighbors watch my trail of smoke and seem to size me as a joke, and smile when I go by. Old guys who sit in shabby nooks and paw the leaves of ancient books look on me with disdain, and residents whose only pride is that their dads for freedom died, observe me with a pain. With such a bank account as mine, with all around me sleek and fine, my life should be a song; I am the man who cuts the ice, I am the one who has the price, and yet I don't belong.
