More than the umi&I amuunt ( winter crop damage, particularly in the western part of the Klte, is a feature of the April 1st Oregon crop condition re port, issued by the U. S. Bureau of market and crop estimates, F. L. ; Kent, local agricultural statistician. Winter wheat Several counties in the eastern part of the state had a snow coveriug on most of the wheat fields on April 1st, hence no satis factory line could he gotten on con dition of the crop In certain coun ties, particularly Buker. Wallowa, and part of Union. Much of the wheat in the heavier producing coun ties was sown late last fall, and growth at the present time is not up to norm.il for this date. In the western part of the state, winter killing is reported to be considerably greater th.iu usual, due mainly to a lot of alternate freezing and thaw ing weather, with much moisture In the soil. Winter kill in the eastern part of the state appears to be less than was anticipated from the con dition in which the crop entered the winter. lu a good many fields have the stuud was materially reduced, but not to a point where It was con sidered that rescedir.g would be ad visable. Most of the reseeded fields have been sawn to spring wheat, but in the western part of the state other crops will be planted. Western Ore gon soil condition has not been fa vorable to spring wheat seeding this season. The condition of the winter wheat crop for the state as a whole, on April 1. is estimated to be 90.0 per cent of a normal condition, com pared with 99.0 per cent last year, and a 10 year average of 95.0 per cent. The United States crop condition 1b placed at 78.4 per cent of normal on April 1, 1922, compared with the 91.0 condition per cent a year ago, and a ten year average of 84.3 per cent. With an average abandonment and growing conditions, the 1922 crop Is forecasted at 572,974,000 bushels, compared with 587,032,000 bushels in 1921, 610,597,000 bushels in 1920, and a five year average of 578,575,000 bushels. . The condition of the Oregon rye crop is estimated at 92.0 per cent of normal, compared with 97.0 per cent a year ago, and a 10 year aver age of 97.0 per cent. The average monthly wage, with board, is reported ut un average of $.15,000 to (40.00. with a few re ports as low as $30.00 per month. Without board the monthly wage ranges from $50 to $75, depending to some extent on supplies furnished by the employer. Day wages with board are reported from $1 to $3 per day. Pay wages without board, of which there Is not much employed, is reported at from $2 to $3. For the United States the farm labor supply Is estimated at 99.5 per cent of last year's supply, with the demand only 89. 0 per cent of a year ago.
