ANOTHER NEWSPAPER CREED Several weeks ago we reprinted here a statement from the Burns Times-Herald covering its editorial policy and purposes as a newspaper It was a statement of which any newspaper might be proud. The pur poses of the paper as there set forth were those that any newspaper might make its own. We now have another newspaper creed. This is from the Republican of Stanley, Wisconsin. It appeared on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the paper and we present it as another state ment of the high purpose to which most of the country newspapers of the nation aspire. "We commit The Republican to the task of doing for another gener ation the same service which it did for the past generation. The task of keeping the men of the community united and keeping their vision clear. We commit it to the task of discour aging petty factionalism, individual selfishness and petty Jealousies ,811 with the purpose of making every thing and everybody subservient to the one big idea. We commit The Re publican to the task of helping men and women to see that what builds np the community, enriches it in community resources and adds to the Individual wealth of every person in the community; and that most of the wreckage along the shores of time is the result of selfish methods to gain an undue advantage. There can be no community progress ex cept with a united front. What pro gress Stanley has made has been due to the unanimity with which Stanley men have worked to achieve a definite purpose. The petty bicker ings and factionalism and jealousies which have kept other towns at a standstill have been conspicuous by their absence here. "It takes men to build a town. It requires leadership and brains and Industry. We've always thought it tenantless and cold and gray and dead, without base ball, and penantless, with none to paint it red. But now Professor Pickering sees life signs every where, and maybe men are liquoring in soft drink joints up there; and maybe skates political as gifted statesmen pose, and kickers, dourly critical, de nounce the movie shows. We've viewed the moon through telescopes, its craters and its vales; though fakers, in their yellow scopes, framed up some dizzy tales, of living beings dwelling there, we thought their tales were bunk; no orators were yelling there, no statesmen peddled bunk. We gave no time to bickering, our platform was so strong; but now Professor Pickering has shown us where we're wrong. He's found a lot of greenery, strange plants that grow and thrive; amid that ghastly scenery some cow feed is alive; and is it merely vanity? if such green things appear, there's sure to be humanity on hand, to profiteer. The learned Professor Pickering to our belief says, "Scat !" So jjlay him on your Chickering and paste him in your for their achievements. It has never hesitated to ignore and help the com munity to forget men who were trou blemakers and who sought to create strife and factionalism. This will con tinue to be Its policy. Service has been our watchword. It there be men and women in this community fit to serve, it will be our greatest op portunity to assist them to serve as It has ever been." rHMMTTTSITPATTfYVS EXPLAINS BOXING POLICY To The Editor: A change has recently been made in the manner in which boxing con' tests will be conducted in the city of Bend under the auspices of the American Legion, and as this change has not been widely advertised I have been asked to make a public state ment through the medium of the newspapers setting forth my own ideas as to how these contests should be run and the views of the American Legion regarding such contests. I In the first place, the American Legion is not particularly anxious to become involved in the boxing game. The local post would a great deal rather that some outside pro motor take it upon himself to put on these bouts and if he can make any money out of them he is wel come to it. So far the only ones who have made any money out of boxing in Bend have been the boxers them selves. However, it was thought that if the American Legion would get behind the matches and sponsor the bouts, appointing for that purpose one of their own members of oversee and pass on coming contests, the worthy of it and to give them credit game would get back on its feet Every home should have Flow ers for Thanksgiving. It adds to the festive spirit and enjoy ment of the occasion and the cost is very moderate if you or der from us. We can supply you with Chrysanthemums the Thanksgiving Flower, or with any other sp.eies of Cut Flowers or Pot Plants. again in Bond. Acting on this opinion the local post of the American Le gion agreed to back boxing matches provided they met with the approval of their appointed matchmaker and, In his opinion, measured up to a standard which the American Legion would care to lend their name and reputation too. In my opinion there is only one reason, why attendance has fallen away at the matches. If locul promo tors insist on putting on mediocre cards made up of mediocre boxers It can be taken for granted that peo ple will not pay the prices asked lo go to the matches. With the possible exception of one or two men there is nobody In Bend with ability en ough to rate even a third class match in Portland and yet these same boys have been matched and rematched in semi-windup and main bouts in Bend until the public Is tired of seeing them appear, and have hud to pay a good price at that. I have the backing of the Ameri can Legion behind me when I say that, starting with the Thanksgiving Day card next Thursday night, any card staged under the auspices of the American Legion will have at least two high class boxers of reputation on the bill. If men can be found In Bend who show promise of develop ment they will be pushed as fast as possible and given a chance to show what they can do, but under no con ditions will they be allowed to go against good men simply because they are a home product. They will have to earn their chance to meet the good ones. It will not lie necessary for uny boxer to stage u fight In u poolroom to show how good he Is as Iho pro mot or will do all Iho necessary ad vertising and there Is a competent referee who will tell him Just how good ho is after the bout is over. I believe that If these rules arc carried out to the best of our ability that the boxing game can lie pu back Into the prominent position it onco held In Itend, but It can never regain Its old place unless tho public can bo assured of clean square bouts Personally. 1 would rather pay five times tho prlco ami soo a champion than to pay two bits to watch a cou ple of, hams commit a murder. At any rato it Is tho Intention of tho Amer ican Legion to bring in the best mun obtnlnublo for future cards and If the public does not respond wo are willing to let the boxing game dlo a peaceful death. In conclusion, I wish to say that Matchmaker Charles Carroll and my self are working In conjunction on these affairs and ho Is in comploto accord with my sentiments. I have absolutely no Interest In tho matches beyond the Interests of the American Legion and tho desire to sco good boxers and good matches.
