"THE LAST GREAT STAND" President Harding's proclamation setting aside the period of May 22 to 28 as Forest Protection week bids the American people to look to the protection and care of their remain ing forest resources. That there Is seed for such admonition is fully warranted when one faces squarely the facta ot timber depletion. The Pacific northwest is now the nation's wood lot how long will it remain such If forest fires are not kept out of our timber? Unless each man, woman and child that goes into our forests realizes a personal responsi bility regarding fire the "last great stand" of timber ot the northwest will go, just as the white pine ot New England and the lake states went, and as the yellow pine of the south Is going now. Timber depletion has now reached a point In this country where three fifths of the primeval forests are gone and where 1 per cent of the timber that is left is west ot the great plains. Colonel W. B. Greeley, chief forester of the United States forest service, recently told the mem bers of the Chicago Association ot Commerce. Liberal use of American forests was a necessary part of the commer cial growth of this nation. Colonel Greeley believes, but forest protec tion and reforestation should have been practiced, if not from the start, at least in late years. There Is an abundant area of forest land in thin country to support all Industries, and a liberal supply of wood Is most necessary to the people of this country. It was thought that, like the European countries, we would use, when our civilization was older, but one-third or one-half as much wood per capita as we did in the early days. But this rule does not affect the American people. The roads In the vicinity of Shanl ko were rendered muddy again yes terday, according to Navy Recruiting Officers W. E. Barrlngton, E. E. Meyers and J. J. Sauera, who drove through from Portland to Bend on special work. They passed through a very heavy rainstorm In Wasco county. The Dalles-California highway In Deschutes county was declared ex cellent by the members of the party, except where it was necessary to turn out for passing cars, the side of the road not being packed.
