If you owned a store you could not make a big success unless your business methods were as modern as your competi tors. Unless Oregon develops her shipping facilities she cannot expect to get her share of the world's business. It rests with the citizens of this state whether Oregon shall develop her wonder ful resources and reach out for bigger markets, or remain prac tically an inland state. To become a real port, a 30 foot channel must be dredged in the Columbia and Willamette Rivers from Portland to the Pacific Ocean. This will enable farmers, stockmen and lumber men in the interior of the state to reach the markets of the world at a lower freight rate and greater profit to themselves. The taxing and bonding power to make these improve ments can be granted the Port of Portland only by the people of the state. . You and every other citizen will benefit if you, on November second, I VOTE 310 YES ON THE BALLOT THE PORT OF PORT LAND DOCK COMMISSION CONSOLIDATION BILL. OREGON PORT DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE, L. W. Dependable, trustworthy merchandise insures satisfaction. And as most people take pride in possessing trustworthy merchandise, it puts the store that handles only that kind where it rightfully belongs foremost in the community. v The store that sells clothing that appeals to the pride of the wearer, always finds its business on the increase. ; That store does not need to resort to subterfuge, deceit, etc., in order to make business hum. v Cheap merchandise, like cheap labor, does not appeal to the thoughtful, common sense citizen. Reliability distinguishes the worth-while things of life, makes friends of acquaintances, lays the foundation of happi ness and prosperity. New times and methods, in business as well as in poli ticthe old time torch light and razzledazzle spell-binder and all, are gone. The successful business these days must be built with honest methods reliable merchandise of real valueand an honest effort to do the most and best by every one of its customers.
