A monthly circular issued by a Se attle bank, in which business condi tion in the Northwest are dls enssed, contains the following, under the heading, "Tourist Travel": "Tourist travel to the Pacific Northwest this summer by rail and boat is far exceeding that of previous years. "The tourist crop is becoming one of our valuable assets. What it may mean to a region was indicated In a recent statement from Los Angdos, which showed that the annual vaiue of that district's seven principal products of the soil oranges, lem ons, deciduous fruit, cotton, wheat barley and beans totaled only $148,000,000, while the value per annum of the tourist crop was placed at $150,000,000. Our own crop could be improved by more intensive cultivation." The increased flow of tourist trav el Into the Northwest is undoubted ly due to the work of the Northwest Tourist association, which, for the past several years, has by extensive advertising in eastern and Canadian newspapers and magazines. and through Frank Branch Riley's lec ture tours spread throughout the country the news of the attractions of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, A few more earthquakes In South edn California and a continuation of the work of the Northwest Tourist association will produce a remark able increase in our crop. SWIMMERS LEARNING TO RESCUE DROWNING X. M. C. A. Club Takes Up Life Saving Develope Into Expert Swimmers Exams Soon. Interest in the Y. M. C. A. Swim min'g club continues high in spite of the hot weather. In the regular meeting Saturday evening, the begin ners' 20-yard race was won by Rhodes, with Cardwell second and Going third. In the 60-yard handicap Todd took first place, Cunningham second, and Hlxburg third. Todd, who was scratch man, is developing into a real swimmer, and, in the judgment of Ray Trickey, the instructor, may some day compete with the best. Life-saving methods were studied for part of the period, with both land drill and work in the water. The five methods of release, five methods of rescue, resuscitation and the proper method of approach to a drowning person, were learned by members of the club. A polo game, diving and general j practice concluded the events. Two , weeks remain until the swimming examination and all of the boys are working tyard to qualify on one or Reduce the amount of money paid for Shoes each year by having them REPAIRED There is a difference in how that work is done. Champion Shoe Repair Shop 861 Wall Street L Eft PinD.iritfRhumos w I My I'll vote for Cox and Harding when comes elec tion day, and thus avoid retarding the good times on the way; they stand, in seemly manner for our old spangled banner; from Portland to Savanner let's sound our lound hooray. I'll vole forllox and Carding for presidential jobs; I want to see them guarding our sacred thingumbobs; when these two are elected our rights will be respected, our wrongs will be corrected, and we'll cut out the sobs. The ticket's surely regal, the smoothest thing in view; well may our famous eagle rear up and scream a few; they're men of reputation, who've won our admiration, and they will sweep the nation from Waco to Wahoo. I cheer for Card and Hoxing throughout the busy day, when I am busy boxing my odes to ship away; and in my sleep I'm dream ing of faces proudly beaming and eagles bravely ' screaming upon election day. When they're de clared the winners the rich will go to jail, the poor will have their dinners and every kind of kale; of coal we'll have our bin full ; we'll all be glad and grinful, the pitfalls of the sinful will never more avail. So rise up, men and brothers, rise up, of one accord! Rise, sisters, aunts and mothers, and vote in every ward! Let's gain the full fruition of every high ambition and lay the opposition, all stricken, on the sward! the other of the classes. The mem bership of the club has now reached 38 and the new members are still coming in. Cotton Spinning in Japan.
