Response to our recent mention of the opportunity to give a little pleasure to homeless and fatherless children indicate that there is a broad current of sympathy running through the life of this community. Nothing will touch the heart mors quickly than as appeal on behalf of the little ones. The answers we have had indicate that there will' be a few children, at least, whose rives will be touched by something more than the institutional care they are now re ceiving. From Prlneville. came the answer that was possibly the most interest ing because of the fact (hat seemed to have prompted the letter: that is. a realization from a personal exper ience of what it means to be home less. It reads in part: ,"I would like to hear from three children at least. I prefer a boy and girl, and last, but not least I would like to hear from the most forlorn and hopeless child and will help them to' anything' they heed. Prefer children who are about to step o'lt into the world as I wilt gladly help them to any trade or profession they desire, as I aa a homeless child myself, travels taking me to all parts of the civilized world.' "I would also like to be advised' as to whether they are in need of clothes. Also if I might be able to call and see' them." It is needless to say that this writer and the others will be put in touch with children who will appre ciate the friendship offered. No increase in auto license fees is required in order to pay the interest and principal of all state highway bonds that can be issued under the pending 4 per cent constitutional amendment that will be voted upon at the May 21 election. Neither is any increase required In the gaso line tax. Nor is any tax on property involved. Revenue, from the auto license fees and gas tax at present rates will be ample to care for both interest , and principle of all the bonds that can. be issued under the proposed per cent limitation. The present road bonding limit is 2 per cent of the assessed value of property In the state. The increasd is neces- . sary in order to make It possible to complete the, main state highways within the next' few years, instead of waiting indefinitely for the.ir comple tion from annual' reveaues. And oil is going up with gas, the oil we all must buy; and so I pause to say "Alas!" and say it with a sigh. And spark plugs cost a bone a throw that once were fifty cents; and motor ists, submerged in woe, are sulking in their tents. They gaze upon the windswept hill they can't afford to mount, for every mile runs up a bill that breaks their bank account They view the long, inviting road where they would like to speed, but they are chained to their abode by cost of things they need- They cannot tour the moorland track, or journey anywhere, unless they're willing to get back to.
