Grand Pro, the 111 tie vlllnKe w hich wn the scene of tho deportation of the Acadian In 1 T.".". In onfy n hort dlNtuuce from Wolfvllle, but little I left of the vil lage where the tragedy told of by the poet wn enacted. The chief object of Intercut In what waa once Grand Pre, arc the mammoth, gnarled ancient wil low tree, known as Kvungellne's wil low, which tand, a conspicuous group, amid the fertile green meadows and erve a a windbreak. They show their age, these ancient tree, and were undoiihtedly planted by the French Ca nadian; for the Acadian Invariably planted willow wherever they nettled, und thctie trees are perpetual memo rial of them. Beside the willow, thero may he seen at the site of Grand Pre the old well, portion of the foun dation of the church of St. Charles, mid ome stone that mark the site of the priest's house. These willow trees are nlway visited by tourists, and al though history doe not exactly tully with the poet' account of the deporta tion of tho Acadian, and though there amy be n division of opinion n to the Justice of the act by the Kngllsh In the deportntlon of thn Acadian, tho old willow tell no tales, but stand, sturdy nnd strong, and arc sightly landmarks still bale and vigorous. Poetical Inspiration, It Is not about great events that great novels are written. The same Is true of great poems. Not "the 15 decisive buttles of the world," but nch relatively unimportant ones ns nnlaklnva, Ivry, Hohenllnden and Plcn helm have Inspired the poets. Wa terloo wn considered to be the greatest battle of modern times, tint the lines Byron Inserted In "Cbllde Harold" constitute the only memora ble poem ever written about It. The only ballad of the Civil war, which became fixed forever In people's minds, related to no great bnttlo but to Stone wall Jackson' march through the lit tle town of Frederick. The great events are peak In the mountain ranges of time, that leave little to the imagination. Literature thrives by the streams of legend nnd glory that run down from them nnd by the limes and roads of emotion, aspiration, passion nnd endeavor that tend up to them. The side lights nnd side Issue and everyday events nmkt II tern Hire, ns they mnko life Itself, Insects In Amber. The provcrblnl "lly In amber" V strikingly exemplified In a collection of red nmber from Btirmn recently' pre sented to the British museum by R, 0. J. Swinhne, of Mandnlny. The amber Is unusually rich In Insects, including, according to Prof. T. D, A. Cockerell, who has examined the material, 81 new species, of which five ore types of new genera. Host of these are found In a block of amber rather larger than a man's flat. This has been cut luto slices about half an Inch thick. Nearly every large order of Insect Is repre sented with the exception of nta. Bclentlflc America, AT THE HOTELS Motel Wlighl. M, N, C.artwrlKht, Portland. Mr. mid Mr. Olo Hlmonson, Brothers. II. O. HOW HAILSTONES ARE FORMED According to Theory, Electrical Action Is Responsible for Storms That Frequently Do Damage. The formation of hail through elec trlcul action, according to one theory. I an lnteretli)g and even wonderful process. The wind draws out a cloud Into a long, narrow strip. In that form, owing to the great amount of surface exposed to the air, the cloud evaporate rapidly, producing intense cold. iJary particles of snow are then form ed, and these, by friction with the wa ter drops, quickly become charged with negative electricity. But the water drops carry positive electricity, and since negative attracts positive a film of water I formed upon each snow particle and 1 Instantly frozen into a layer of thin Ice. At thl thickness It outer surface remains moi.t, the water not freezing so rapidly there, whereupon the elec trical charge chonyes from negative to positive and the particle Is repelled by the water drop and driven to the outer parts of the cloud. Here the In creased cold covers It with snow, and friction charges It anew with negative electricity. Kepolslon Is now once more changed for attraction, and the particle rushes buck Into the cloud, receiving uHn its surface another film of water, which Is turned Into n second Ice layer. Thus the growing hailstone darts zig-zag through the cloud, piling up Its alternate layers of snow and Ice, until gmvltatlon gulns control and sends it with a jingling crowd of its fellows spinning to the ground. Dust Is Very Dangerous. All kinds of dust form dangers to hiiinun beings. Not only does dust ex ercise a direct harmful Influence on the tissues of the organism, but It Is the chief transporting agent of germs of Infection and contagion. Dust Is composed of infinitesimal particles of street mud and of refuse of every description which lies on the surface of the still. Bacteriologists say that these par particles, when dry, are disseminated In the atmosphere, together with all the Impurities and microbes which they rony contain, and to which they serve a transporting agents.
