The farmer and the business man of this com munity are partners in the progress or the failuie of their community. If they pull together, the progress and prosperity is certain to come. IF they listen to preachers of class hatred there can only be failure as a result. THE SHEVLIN-HIXON COMPANY BEAUTIFUL LAND OF HOLLAND Oliver Goldsmith's Description of Dutch Country at True Today as When Ho Wrote It. "In winter, when their canals are frozen, every house Is forsaken, and all people are on the Ice ; sleds drawn by horses, and skating, are at that time the reigning amusements," Oliver Goldsmith wrote of the Dutch. "They have boats here that slide on the Ice, and are driven by the winds. When they spread all their sails they go more than a mile and a half a minute, and their motion Is so rapid the eya can scarcely accompany them. Their ordinary manner of traveling is very Cheap and very convenient ; they sail In covered boats drawn by horses ; and In these you are sure to meet people of all nations, riere the Dutch slum ber, the French chatter, and the Eng lish play cards. Any man who likes company may have it to his taste. For my part I generally detached myself from all society, and was wholly tak en up In observing the face of the country. Nothing can equal its beauty; wherever I turn my eye. fine houses, elegant gardens, statues, grottos, vis tas, presented themselves; but when you enter their towns you are charmed beyond description. ; Airplane Prospecting. ' The airplane .'s destined to be of enormous utility In facilitating pros , pecting for and opening up mineral properties in me Auuruu mucjn, HydroplnneR con fly from the Pacific i to the upper waters of the Amazon In a few hours, while there are good lauding places for planes on ninny of the snow fields of the higher Andes, which have never yet been explored. The airplane Is almost Ideal for transporting precious metals, where the value is high In proportion to weight and bulk, and the time-saving Is so important as well as the safe ty from robbery. Already plans are under way to use planes In Peru and Colombia. Financial Statement Of THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF BEND At the Close of . Business May 12, 1919 r RESOURCES. Authorship Not Determined. "The more I see of human nature, tho more I love" dogs." The common phrasing of this cynicism Is: "The more I sen of men the belter I like dogs." Tills has proved tho despair of tho Industrious folk who run quot able passages down to their source. Because the sentiment Is somewhat sardonic It has been attributed to the French and credited to Victor Hugo nnd Georges Sand, but the ntlrllnitlnn has never been satisfactorily forHflnd by the citation of chapter and verse. The authorship remains n problem, nnd when It was proposed here some years ago tho curious scholarship of lliose whoare alert to nnswer these ques tions fulled to shed any light. Mines Threaten Shipping. Naval authorities say it will be sev eral years before the truer of Eu rope are entirely free of floating mines. Many of the German mines destroyed by allied trawlers were found to have been moored by ropes. When the rope rotted the mines broke from their anchorages nnd drifted in many cases to the main line of steam travel. 444444c TOMORROW NIGHT "The College Widow" B. A. A. C. It Is an Interesting bit of history, In view of tho Importance of posters as an Inspiration and Interpretation of patriotism, that the Marseillaise was inspired by a contemporary poster. At first thought one might Imagine that the art of the poster, as It Is now un derstood, tvus unknown In 171'-'. but the proclamation of the mayor of Slrnss burg, with Its terse, ringing sentences, bcxjunlng "To arms, citizens!" was no doubt as effective in the pouters pro duced In 1118. Posted on the' city walls, as Jean ltlcheplu of the French academy has Just pointed out, tho words of tho proclamation directly in spired Rouget de Lisle In the composi tion of the "Marseillaise," or, as It was first called, "The War Song of the Annies of the Rhine." I.utrr the con vention at Purls untitled It the "Hymn of .Marseilles." but the public promptly named It "La Marseillaise." and It might almost he suld to bave 't the mnyor's poster to music.
