Early this week two traveling men came into Bend with a story about a bis battle on the western front, in which thousands of Americans were losing their lives or being captured. The tale spread rapidly and before many hours had reached even Prine ville and La Pine, the story being enlarged upon with each repetition. It later proved to be nothing but idle -gossip. Finding that Oregon communities j block IS are being fed up on falsehoods of various kinds, that tte people here as elsewhere are repeating these Btorle8 for truth and are thus creat ing a morale that is injurious to the cause which brought the United 6tates to declare war on Germany, the administration at Washington is asking the people of this state to re frain from passing judgment on the way 'the war is being won, or from Baying and doing things that will destroy confidence. Don't believe rumors that are ped dled about surreptitiously. COUNTY RECORDS (Furnished by Cenral Oregon Ab s.raci Company.) Jatnee M. Lawrence to Bmeline Waterbrook, warranty deed. EMPTYING RAPIDLY Commission Humor" Is Denied Retl Cross Has Xevv I.uncli Counter to SeU. It is thoughr. that some pro-German sympathizers have been circulat ing information around to the effect that the Red Cross Superfluity shop is taking 50 per cent, commission instead of 10 per cent, on all goods sold there and tor this reason some of the goods have been withdrawn. Mrs. H. K. Brooks, in charge of the place, has specially requested that this rumor be denied. The shop sends out a call for sal ads, pies and cakes and for articles to fill up the shelves with merchan dise, which are rapidly being emp tied. Old clothes would be desirable donations just at present. A lunch counter completely equipped and brand new was present ed to the shop, but owing to lack of space it could not be used. It is now on sale and anyone desiring to make such an investment should make in quiries there. In the bank there is now $290 to the credit of the shop in the short time, less than two weeks, It has 1 been in operation. WII.I. 11(11 il !'
