Govern ment appeal agents aro directed, In an order Just Issued by the provost marahalTgeneral at Washington, to appeal to a district board every case where a draft registrant who has married since May 18, 1917, has been granted deferred classification by bis local board on account of being mar rlod. Today was marked by the opening of a new grocery Btore In Bend, one complete with all modern and sani tary equipment and a varied stock of fancy and staple goods. The Bennett- Cooper Company is Installed in Its new quarters In the east half ot the lower floor in the Pringle Building and is prepared to handle trade from now on. Louis Bennett, formerly proprietor of Bennett's grocery on Oregon Btreet, and W. C. ' Cooper, better known here as the representative of tho Mason-F.hrman Company, of Port land, head tho firm, which has a branch house at Sliver Lake. John F. Fink, recently from The Dalles, will bo bookkeeper for both stores. Clay Miller, who has been identified with other similar stores in this city, will complete tho Btaff of the new company. All new fittings have been Installed In the grocery, special glass cabinets being provided for meats, chetse and other perishable goods. Beneath the counter are cases for evaporated fruits, which may be seen from the front through the glass plates which form one side of the bins. White enamel counters, shelves and wood work together with light blue walls make the store light and pleasant in appearance. An entire new stock has boen put In, every cereal or article in tho line of canned goods being packed this fall. A large portion of the ship mcnts are still to arrive. Senator McCumber this afternoon in troduced a bill drafting Into govern ment service all males between he aigos ot 18 and 62, including all rail road employes nd shipyard laborers. He also plans to commandeer the rooming houses to house the workers. Famous Cruisers Of Turkish Fleet Are Lost In Fight ( lly United PrtM to Th Dallr Bulletin) LONDON, Jan. 21. British -and Turkish ships fought at the trance of the Dardanelles early today. The Turkish cruiser Mldullu, formerly the German cruiser, Brealau, was sunk and the cruiser, Bultan Sellm, at one time Its sister ship, the Goeben, was beached. Aircraft then at- lacked the stranded vessel. The British lout two monitors In the battle. The Mldullu and the Suit in fiellm were the two principal ships In the Turkish fleet, be ing of recent construction and intended for tho Teutonic B'luadron. Several years ago they were sold by the Germans and the names changed. Both figured largely In the news of ocean raids before becoming Turkish possessions. C, Jan. 21 Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo told the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee that one billion dollars must be advanced for railroad im provements before the lines can bej placed on an effective war basis. He forecasted a continuation of federal control when he said that Congress should not limit the gov ernment control to any definite per iod, saying that financial chaos is likely to result from It. He stated that he did not believe In govern ment ownership but believed that a greater measure of federal control ould be necessary hereafter. Mc Adoo said the Garfield fuel order will probably be discontinued after 30 days. MINIMUM FIXED ON COAST PORK PRICE (By United Prau to The Bend Bulletin.) SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., Jan. 21. By a voluntary agreement of the Pa cific Coast packers with the food ad ministration, the minimum price on hogs in the three far western states was fixed at one cent under the fed eral minimum in the Chicago market. The price In the eastern city Is now $15 50 per hundredweight. ALLIES HARRASSING TEUTONIC TROOPS (By United Preu to The Bend Bulletin.) WASHINGTON, D. C, Jan. 21. Secretary of War Baker announced that the allies are harrassing the Teu tons massed for the assault on the western front. They are taking the initiative pending the opening of hos tilities on a massive scale. The po sition of the menaced Italians has been greatly improved. MONEY NEEDED RAILROADS Formation Of Deschutes Does Not Affect Ballot SALEM, Or., Jan. 21. (Special to Tho Bulletin.) Deschutes county, at the coming primary and general elec tions, will be (given ballots tor the 21st Representative District, the 17th Senatorial District, the Second Water Division, and the 13th Judicial Dis trict. Owing to the fact that the last legislature made no reapportionment as to senatorial and representative districts, Deschutes county will re main In the same districts In those re spects as before it was created. The 17th Senatorial District Includes Crook, Deschutes, Jefferson, Klam ath and Lake counties, and the 21st Senatorial District includes the same counties. AMSTERDAM, Jan. 21, Berlin re ports that Ukrainla has agreed to a separate basis for peace with Ger many. Germany Is Jubilant over the pact with Ukrainla. That the Bmaller country will act apart from Russia Is a severe blow to the hopes of the Bolsheviki. Trotsky previously stated that he could not allow the Ukrainian dele gates to treat independently the ques tion of occupied territory, neverthe less, he did so anyway. CONFERENCE NOT CIXSED. COPENHAGEN, Jan. 21. It Is re ported that Trotsky before leaving Brest-Litovsk last week told Kuehl mann he must not consider the peace negotiations discontinued, declaring 'hat they would be resmued again in a week. A blinding snow storm is sweeping the southwest, accompanied by a 50-de-gree drop in the temperature. The blizzard -was the cause of three deaths and has done Intense damage to lire stock. STEERS BRING HIGHEST PRICES IN PORTLAND (By United Preet to The Bend Bulletin.) ' PORTLAND, Jan. 21. Several cars of top steers sold at $11 the hundredweight today in Portland. This is the highest price known here.. Swine prices strengthened as a result of the federal order fixing the mini mum hag price. The order caused much optimism in stock circles. HUSTON CANDIDATE . LONDON, Jan. 21.General Halg re ports only patrol encounters in which a few Germans were captured. be voted on at the coming election, includes the counties east of the Cas cade mountains. While Deschutes county is In the eastern district s regards the election ot public service commissioner, no commissioner Is to be eleoted from that district this year. The one commissioner to be elected. will be named from the state at large. Deschutes county also is in the Sec ond Congressional District and a Rep resentative in Congress from that dis trict Is to be elected this year. As far as state offices are con cerned, the creation of Deschutes county makes practically no differ once to the people of that county. Reapportionment of representative and senatorial districts Is made fol lowing each United States census and as a result some change in this re gard may be effected by the legisltv ture which meets In 1921.
