THE BEND nUXKTIX. DAILY KPITION, BKND. OREGON. TI K8DAY. OfTOIIEIt 8. WIT WEAVER, AT SHORT STRENGTHENS SOX lly If. ('. Hamilton, (United Prom 8ulf Corrwioinlnl. NEW YORK, Oct. 2. The transfer uf Buck Weaver back to his old po sition at shortstop In the White Sor lineup, with McMullin at third bu.se, felmply adds to the predominance the Chicago teuui onjoys over the Giants' infield. With Weaver at th'.rd base and "Rlsberg at shortstop the Sox topped the Giants at second base, were over shadowed at shortstop, had a prob able edge at first base and were stood off at third. Now the Sox have an Advantage at second base and short stop, a probable edge at first base and are topped only at third base, "Where It Is considered by most per sons that Heinle Zimmerman's exper ience and hitting ability places him Ear above MoMullin, a "youth. McMullin may hold bis own as a (fielder with Zimmerman, although there Isn't a third baseman In the Same who can handle bunts and slow ly hit grounders as Zimmerman can. It is certain death at first base to drop one of these in front of Zim merman. Ho has the art of scoop ing up a grounder with his bare hand reduced to a science, and the strength mf his throwing arm makes it almost certain he will got his man. McMullin can't do that kind of Tplaying yet. But on the other hand, It has been men of just his type who lave shown to such tremendous ad vantage in world's series contests. In the quartet of games the White Sox won from the Cubs back in 1906 It was youthful George Rohe who subbed at third base and was the hero of the series. Weaver is a natural shortstop the greatest in the game just now. He and Roger Peckinpaugh, of the New York Americans, simply eclipse other shortfielders now doing duty. Ar thur Fletcher, though a brilliant hit ter and a remarkable fielder, never could cover, the ground or work with the speed of a Weaver. The transfer gives the Sox strength where most critics were inclined to believe they would be weak. It was a lucky day that Clarence Rowland decided to switch his line op and retain McMullin at third base. AT THE MOVIES (irnml ThentiHS A number of Bluebird photoplays have been selected by the manage ment of the Grand Theatre and the first of these will bo shown Thurs day. "A Kentucky Cinderella," pre senting Rupert Julian and Kulh Clif ford, is a five-act comedy drama. "Hell Morgan's Girl" and "Kun Wings" were produced by the same people, and this picture Is reputed to be superior even to these produc tions. The storv Is adapted from R iHopkinson Smith's popular noval, "A Kentucky Cinderella." having been translated to the screen by Bluebird. Rupert Julian directed the feature and will be joint star with Ruth Clif ford In the presentation billed for the Grand Theatre, when "Bluebird Day" Is. again celebrated. Locations for the early scenes were found In the Sierras, and for the reflections of Kentucky some beautiful vistas of Southern California serve as framing for intensely Interesting scenes and situations. Mr. Julian and Miss Clif ford will be supported by the best cast Bluebird ever assembled. Little Zoe Ray and Emory Johnson have been stars In earlier productions, and there will be such clever players as Gretchen Lederer, Myrtle Reeves, Aurora Pratt, Lucretla Harris, Frank Lanning, Harry Carter and Eddie Polo.
