MARCH 21. 1917 LES DARCY QUICKLY LOSING POPULARITY Endeavor of Australian Champion to , Squirm Out of Contract With Gibbons, Is Disliked. By H. C. Hamilton, (United Press Staff Correspondent) NEW YORK. March 21. When Lea Darcy, the Australian pugilist, arrived in this city from his home and announced himself ready to fight with anyone the United States could trot out, the sports scribes began to hoorny and boom things for the vis itor. Here was a man they contend ed, who would win himself into such favor that he wouldn't be able to count his American dollars within a few months. Right away Darcy contended he wanted to fight Make Gibbons, the recognized peer of any American mid dleweight. He might take on Dillon, iaflske and the rest of the bunch, but bis main objective was Gibbous, he contended. Then Jack Dillon's signature was attached to a set of articles for a ten round bout with Darcy. It would ha6 been a great mill. Nothing tnat could be written of Dillon in New York could alter the fact that he still is a great fighter. Billy Miske's two alleged victories over the man killer were very question able and Al McCoy's battle with the Indianapolis boy only served to prove tnai Al is very, veiy tough. Bnt while all these -negotiations were In process, there was in New York the spectacle of Mike Gibbons vainly chasing. the Australian cham pion in an effort to get a bout. Shades of John L. Sullivan and Bob Fitzsimmons! When did - Aus tralia begin sending out champions who had the right to dictate to the American scrappers? Where, oh where is Bill Squires and several other phenoms seat to this country from the Island continent? Has an American marvel no standing withf the Australian crusher? Gibbons adopted the wrong course t and he said so when he found the ex ; U1J1J JU ,JLn Just Arrived Your Dress Your Hat and Your Shoes Evory woman of refined tnato cherishes and insists upon beautiful dresses and huts the styles of tho times. "I know my own drawing power and I was working on the belief that a match between Darcy and myself would fill any arena in the United States. I should have waited for s him to make the first move." Gibbons outclasses Darcy In the minds ot Americans. Anyone who would favor the Australian in a bout with the St., Paul flash would be taking an awful chance on a lucky wallop, for Mike is the peer of any boxer in the ring. Darcy and Gibbons are scheduled for a 10 round match at Milwaukee for the night of April 10. Frank - Mulkern, the Milwaukee promoter, declares Darcy will have to carry It "out or the courts will have a chance . to say why. Darcy Is Just as firm in the declaration that he will do noth ing of the sort, and he is taking the stand that is certain to bring him In worse favor with the American fight public than he ever has been before. than a month to think It over. Meanwhile the movement'is spread ing to London. TO REPORT OX $100,000 BOND. (Continued from Page 1.) Description, NW VI of NV 4 of SE i Section 4, Township 13, Range 12 East W. M. Geo. W. John SteidI, pointing to the past achievements of Bend, asserted that to turn down a chance ot the kind to insure railroad construction, would be' absolutely out of the question: He declared that the railroad would Increase Bend's population at least one-third; - A. E. Edwards, of the Central Labor and Trades Council, promised that the labor unions of Bend would vote for the issue almost to a man. (Br United Press to the, Bend Bulletin) LONDON, March 21. A shadow fell across the placid path of English Journalism today. There Is a move ment afoot to Induce ' all London newspapers to pool their properties and Issue a single sheet, thus releas ing the staffs of all but one tor active duty at the front. They're trying it on the dog first. When the staffs ot the two local papers In the little village of Peter borough appeared before the military tribunal for their regular semi-an- nual exemption they were informed that the mayor had decided the two papers should merge Into one, and that half of them could go and get measured for khaki. - . The proprietors naturally sat up on their hind legs and howled. But the ears of a tribunal are 0eaf, and the publishers hare less (By United Press to the Bend Bulletin) KANSAS CITY, Mo March 21. This Is the first day ot spring and here is a story to fit It. Every year the same robin redbreast returns to the flower garden of Thomas R. Bea ham's home and makes his nest In the snowball bush. Robbie is easily identified because he has only one leg. Or, if he has another, he never lets it down. He has an eye for beauty, too, this robin. Every spring he brines the prettiest little girl robin of the whole bunch for his mate, and the spot be has chosen for his home Is one of the most beautiful and artistic in all Kansas City. Robbie's advent Is looked and hoped for by children and grownups for blocks around. He is expected almost any day.
