So critical has the car shortage situation become locally that it has become neccssnry for the Knnpp- Chenoy Company, operators of the box factory of The Shevlin-Hlxon Company, to close down its plant for a week to enable it to relieve the congestion In Its dry sheds and to make whnt shipments o( stock for which cars will bo nvailble. Tho suspension ot operation, ac cording to Manager G. W. Cheney, will probably continue for a period of only one week, during which time he believes that the congested con dition of their shipping rooms will be rellevod. "FoMhe Inst several weeks," said Mr. Cheney, "we have been able to get only about 25 per cent of the cars necossnry to fill urgent orders. Business Is good, but car are not obtainable anywhere." Three, and possibly four, summer camps will be established by The Shovlln-Hlxon Company aa aoon a the winter wenthor breaks, accord ing to Ernest F. The marriage of Dr. W. G. Manning and Mra. Laura M. Headlnglon, on Wednesday night, came aa a complete surprise to their many friends. The ceremony was performed in the pres ence of only a few friend and rel atlves, Rev. H. C. Hartranft offic iating. Miss Harriet McCuen, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid and B. A. Stover acted a best man. The ceremony was followed by an an nouncement dinner given at the home of Mr. A. M. Lara, after which music and dancing were enjoyed by the guests. Mr. and Mr. Manning will be at home in Bend after a trip of a few daya. Aliutkun Dance. ' More than 100 couples have been Invited to attend the Alaskan dance to be given tonight at the Emblem club. Instructions have been Is sued that costumes becoming to a Sourdough shall be worn by all who attend, else drastic measure will be taken to see that they do. Efforts have been made to decorate the hall as much like an Alaskan dance hall as possible. A large bar ha been erected at one end of the room, from which "hard" aoft drinks will be served with "hot dog sandwiches" and coffee. With no Immediate relief in view, the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Co. may be compelled to close down a part of Its plant for a short time until shipments now on ita books can be made and the store rooms cleared of the large amount of stock that is on hand. According to General Mana ger J. P. Keyos, the mill may operate only the day shift and the men In the dry sheds mny work only eight hours daily. If it is found that But flclont cars can be had to warrant the using of the men In the shipping department on two shifts, while the mill is closed down, this may be done to relieve the situation. Of the 800 cars that were needed last month to handle the company's shinning business, only 86 cars were received. Munlral.
