Alton Thompson and County Agrlcultural l8t II. A. Ulanchard have boon busy 'organizing Industrial clubs In Dos tihutes county. Four clubs wore formed, with a total membership of 84 hoys and girls, who will raise potatoes tills year for competition In tho state priio. Clubs were form ed, at Bond. Deschutes and Tumalo. Tho Pilot llutte Potato club elected Jtay Wornstaff president and Jessie Stooky for secretary. Tho Juniper Covo Potato club named Clyde Smith for president and Mildred Wlttcnian for secretary. Tho Deschutes Potato club elected Katherine tied field and Edith Gray to fill their respective offices, whilo the Tumalo Potato club mado Holbort Wallaco president and Wayne Wright secretary. The plan of these boys and girls clubs is primarily to instill a love of agriculturo within the young peo ple, to teach them to use their hands profitably and to assist tho general agriculture of tho country In help ing to establish a uniform grade of potato and demonstrate Its value in the county. Each member will grow one-eighth of an acre' and perform the major part of the work themselves,' keeping accurate cost account and notes on growth throughout the entire season. This will instill business sense and encourage helpful observation. Each member of tho club receives from time to time instruction sheets on the proper method of planting, treat ing the seed, cultivation, etc. The state otters two prizes. A trip to the state fair at Salem, where the boy or girl will have all expenses paid and will camp under the trees within the grounds. The other in ducement entails all expenses paid to the State Agricultural College at Corvallis for the two weeks instruc tion at the summer school. Each winner wilt be given proper super vision on the trip. Central Oregon raised the best quality of cooking potatoes in the state last year, and has captured many prizes. The club members have an excellent chance. Want Better Egg Prices. The farmers around Prineville, headed by Mr. Ray V. Constable, are seriously considering the formation of an association which will handle their poultry products to better ad vantage. These men feel that if they could standardize the egg output of their section it would place the in dustry on a higher paying basis and attract more and better efforts in that line of agriculture. They feel that there is an opportunity for the small farmer to take advantage of an increasing market and demand in Central Oregon. It has been estimated that the an nual egg .production of the United States is over $600.000,000 enough to build two Panama Canals, or equal to our annual wheat crop. Nearly 8 per cent of this immense fortune is lost annually in the marketing, improper handling between the farm and market. Just now eggs are be ginning to reduce in price, and it is 151 characteristic of farmers to seek some ! method whereby a fair price can be procured. Logically the best method "for the accomplishment of that end is in co-operation; whereby the eggs are graded, candled and guaranteed to such an extent that they are worthy of the better price. Let the prices become ad justed, or some com-L peting force enter in. and in all tooi8tore an(1 ne.u demon8trate. many instances the enterprise falls through because of a lack of co-operation. The population of Central Oregon is growing. Bend Is offering a big ger market every day. Any market; will pay more for a better grade eggs that are candled and guaran teed, with the assurance of a constant supply. The plan of the "Egg Circle" of poultry associations that are the most successful entail the bringing 3n of the eggs by the farmers to a common point, where they are cand led, packed and sent out under the guarantee of the association. The farmers of the Prineville section are being assisted' by the county agri culturalist toward this end. Follow ing is shown the valuations of tho road and school districts in Des chutes county and an approximation .if ilm valuations In tho districts which aro divided. Be cause of tho linporliiiico of eradicat ing the coyote on account of his part In tho spread of tho rabies epidemic tho recommendations of tho com mittee are given herewith "The conclusion reached nfter thorough discussion with officials in chargo of the government operations In poisoning coyotes, is that, under winter conditions best results aro ob tained from small baits composed of lurd and sugar, each with a poison dose or two and three-fourths (2 ) grains of strychnine (powdered al kaloid).' The strychnine may bo con tained In a No. 2 capsule, or it may bo placed In loose form In a cavity in the renter ot the bait, In tho latter rase, it is essential that the lard be cold and hard when the poison Is added, since wnrm lard qulckloy absorbs tho extremely bit ter taste of Btyehnlne. "The entire process of preparing the baits should bo by means of clean wooden or metal implements to avoid tho taint of human hands. Probably tho most important recom mendation of nil, Is that each bait bo kept in a small, clean paper bag from the time It Is prepared until placed for the coyote. It is advlsod that paper bagB for the purpose bo plainly labeled, "Coyote poison." "The materials are usually at hand for any stockman to preparo his own baits. Good, odorous, home rendered lard Is considered better than the market article. "The committee strongly advo cates that each live stock association employ a competent man to make the baits in quantity, to supply mem bers and co-operators, and that every effort be made to poison the ranges during the remainder of the winter. "In general operations of the kind, it Is important that Inhabitants of tho district be notified and other pro- arrangements bo made to insure the safety of dogs that are valued Directions for Preparing Poison Bulls "(A) In a warm place, mix thor oughly together home rendered lard and sugar In about equal quantities. Place outside to cool until stiff enough to mold into balls about the Bize of a small walnut; or into discs of about the same bulk. Press In the cavities for the poison; place in rows on a clean board and set out side to become thoroughly cold and hard. With a large pointed goose quill or other suitable measure, place the poison in the cavities with care that none be left on the surface. Close the cavities by applying the lard-surgar mixture with a case knife. Cool the baits; lift from the board with a caso knife and transfer each bait to a small paper bag and twist securely shut. Keep in 'a cold place.
