East Oregonian
MILTON-FR EEWA-
TER — It’s time to dust
off the golf clubs and take a
few practice swings as the
P.E.O. Golf Tournament
returns this year.
The two-person alter-
nate shot event is Satur-
day, June 11, 8:30 a.m. at
the Milton-Freewater Golf
Course, 301 Catherine Ave.
Players can enter the men’s,
women’s or mixed divi-
sions. The entry fee of $50
per person includes green
fees and lunch. Additional
lunch tickets are $10. The
event also features games
and prizes, including a
contest for the longest putt,
closest to the pin and the
shortest drive.
The entry deadline for
players is Thursday, June 9.
Also, with a limited number
available, reservations are
required for golf carts.
The golf tournament
helps provide grants and
scholarships through P.E.O.,
an international women’s
philanthropic educational
organization that supports
and celebrates the advance-
ment of women. According
to a press release from Gail
Beeson, P.E.O. has provided
$398 million in finan-
cial assistance to 119,000
women.
“Your support makes a
diff erence,” she said.
Ju l ie t a P u l id o of
Milton-Freewater expressed
gratitude for assistance
provided by P.E.O. She
said the nonprofi t organi-
zation helped jumpstart
her career as a registered
dental hygienist at Broad-
way Family Dental.
“The hygiene program
was expensive to start, even
after a few years of saving,
so the scholarship I received
ensured my start date for
the program,” Pulido said.
“I appreciated so much
what they did for me, that
I became a member with
hopes of helping another
woman in the future reach
her career goals and life
dreams”.
Ruby Mitchell, another
local recipient of educa-
tional funds, is pursuing a
master’s degree in public
health at the OHSU-PSU
School of Public Health, in
Portland. With a focus on
environmental systems and
human health, she’s on track
to graduate in June 2023.
To register for the
tournament, call George
Gillette at 541-938-7284
or stop by the pro shop at
the golf course. For more

Janet McDowell
May 11, 1945 - May 5, 2022
Janet McDowell was a loving wife,
mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
She left this world far too soon on May 5,
2022, at the age of 76.
Janet was born to Clyde
and Ellen Taylor on May 11,
1945, in Preston, Idaho. She
grew up on a dairy farm in
Meridian, Idaho, with her
four brothers, Jerry, Roger,
John and Ross. She attended
school in
Meridian,
Idaho,
graduating from Meridian
High
School.
After
graduation, she attended
Brigham Young
University in Rexburg,
Idaho, to pursue a degree in
interior design.
In November 1968, Janet married her
high school sweetheart, Ron McDowell.
The two lived in Meridian while he worked
for Idaho Power. In 1973, they moved to
Orovada, Nevada, to run a farm they had
purchased. During their time in Nevada,
George, Jody and Brett were born. In
1984, Ron and Janet moved their family
back to Meridian and eventually settled in
Oregon. Janet worked for Wheatland
Insurance until her retirement in 2017.
Janet had many interests, including
water skiing, snow skiing, shopping, ATV
adventures, baking and serving others.
As an active member of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she held
various callings throughout her life.
She was famous for her sugar and
monster cookies which she passed out
every Christmas. Her family looked
forward to receiving their annual “Happy
Birthday” call. She never missed the
chance to celebrate important life events
with her loved ones.
She loved spending time
with her kids, grandkids and
great-grandchildren.
She
loved her family fiercely and
showed them every chance
she got. She supported each
child, grandchild or great
grandchild with her time,
attending soccer games or
rodeos, shopping or baking
cookies together, hugs or a
just phone call if she wasn’t
able to be there in person.
Janet was preceded in
death by her parents, Clyde
and Ellen Taylor; in laws, Glen and Toby
McDowell;
brother, John Taylor; and nephew, Jake
Taylor. She is survived by her husband,
Ron; their four children,
Stephanie (Ted) Hagler, George
McDowell, Jody (Steve) Warnock and
Brett (Kim) McDowell; and daughter-in-
law, Melissa Rodriguez; 12 grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren; three
siblings,
Jerry (Mary) Taylor, Roger (Teresa)
Taylor, Ross (Lorita) Taylor; and sister-in-
law, Cathy Taylor.
Donations may be made, in lieu of
flowers, to the Ronald McDonald House
Charities of Idaho.
A celebration of life will be held June
18, from 4-6 p.m. at Stephanie and Ted
Hagler’s residence, 8221 S. Ten Mile
Road, Meridian, ID 83642.
