Geraldine Rae “Gerry” (Hol-
zapfel) Carroll was born on Aug.
12, 1940, to Gail and Georgia
(McPherson) Holzapfel in The
Dalles, Oregon. On Sunday, Jan.
30, 2022, she lost her last battle
with cancer in her home, surround-
ed by her family at the age of 81.
She grew up in The Dalles and
as a youngster danced for the Elea-
nor Borg Tap Dancing Studio. Gerry and her partner,
Eddie Hamilton, entertained lodges and events around
the area. When Gerry was a junior she moved to Sher-
man County and graduated from “The New Sherman
County High School” in the class of 1958. In July 1959,
she married her childhood sweetheart, Dwayne Carroll,
who was serving in the United States Air Force. Upon
his honorable discharge, they purchased a section of
land in the Ordnance/Hermiston area and put in some
of the very first circle irrigation in Eastern Oregon. In
1965, their daughter, Jeanne, was born, followed close-
ly by their son, Larry, in 1966. Both kids graduated
from Riverside High School in Boardman and went on
to graduate from BMCC in Pendleton.
Gerry’s greatest pleasure in life was caring for her
husband and family. Her dreams came true when her
son, Larry, and daughter-in-law, Vickee, started farming
the ranch in Hermiston and her daughter, Jeanne, and
son-in-law, Joe, started farming her childhood ranch in
Sherman County.
She truly was, one of a kind. Her generous, kind
nature and positive attitude helped her to battle cancer
multiple times starting in her mid twenties. She never
felt sorry for herself, was always more concerned with
the problems of others and was always there to help
when there was a need.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years,
Dwayne; daughter, Jeanne, and husband, Joe Dabulskis,
Sherman County; son, Larry and wife, Vickee Carroll,
Hermiston; grandchildren, Julie and husband, Alex
Devlaeminck, Sherman County, Tyler Carroll and wife,
Tessa, Hermiston, Mic Dabulskis, Sherman County and
Amy Dabulskis, The Dalles; three great-grandchildren,
Aiden, Kinsley and Remy.
Gerry was preceded in death by her parents and a
grandson, Matthew Dwayne Carroll.
A celebration of life gathering will be announced at
a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the
American Cancer Society c/o Burns Mortuary of Herm-
iston, P.O. Box 289, Hermiston, OR 97838.

It is with heavy hearts that we
announce the passing of our broth-
er Ed Sander. He has been living in
Boardman, Oregon, and working at
the local Tillamook County Cream-
ery operation, Columbia River
Processing. He passed away at his
home on Jan. 28, 2022. Ed grew
up in Tillamook attending Sacred
Heart Grade School and Tillamook
High School. Upon graduating, he started working at
the Tillamook Cheese Plant, eventually transferring to
Boardman when they expanded operations. Ed was an
avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting in Eastern Oregon, and
an occasional moose trip to Canada. He also enjoyed
traveling to many countries while on vacation. Ed had
one rule in his life that was nonnegotiable for family,
friends or acquaintances and it was “you may call me
Ed, or Edward, but don’t call me Eddie.”
Ed was born Nov. 28, 1960, in Tillamook, Oregon,
and was the son of Al and Arlene Sander. He is survived
by three sisters, Joan Trapp (Ken), of Happy Valley,
Oregon, Irene Willison, of Forest Grove, Oregon, and
Dot Sander-Ziegler (John), of Renton, Washington. His
six surviving brothers include Louis Sander (Carol), of
Salem, Oregon, Leo Sander, of Tigard, Oregon, Rock
Sander (Christy), of Silverton, Oregon, Ray Sander (Jo-
anne), of Martinez, California, Bernie Sander, of Tilla-
mook, Oregon, and Robert Sander (Melani), of Rocka-
way Beach, Oregon. Ed is also survived by 11 nieces,
five nephews, six great-nieces and 11 great-nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Ar-
lene Sander, who owned Sander Dairy on Sollie Smith
Road, and an infant sister, Mary Agnes Sander.
Three memorial services to celebrate Ed’s life are
scheduled. The first is Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, at Smi-
ley’s Happy Place, 102 Boardman Ave. NW, Boardman,
Oregon, at 1:00 p.m. The second is Thursday, March 3,
2022, in Boardman, Oregon, in the Riverfront Room at
Port of Morrow, 2 Marine Drive, from 4-7 p.m. The third
service is on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the Tillamook
Sacred Heart Cemetery gravesite, located on Cemetery
Road in Port of Tillamook Bay, at 11 a.m. The graveside
service is followed by a luncheon at Alderbrook Hall,
5995 Alderbrook Road, Tillamook, Oregon. Family and
friends are invited to attend these events.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a
donation in his memory to either an animal preservation
or wildlife charity of your choice. Ed’s siblings would
also like to express a deep sense of gratitude to Betty,
her staff and many friends at Smiley’s for the friend-
ship and laughter that Ed thoroughly enjoyed during his
visits. Our brother will be greatly missed by his family
and friends.
Please share memories of Ed with his family
