ENTERTAINMENT Saturday, January 25, 2020 East Oregonian Arts center announces pair of musical performances C3 BRIEFLY By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian ‘Opposites Attract’ during EOU concert show PENDLETON — Pearson Auditorium at Pendleton Cen- ter for the Arts will be alive with sound, as two musical perfor- mances bookend the last weekend of the month. West My Friend, a group that’s been described as every- thing from indie-roots to cham- ber-folk, will perform Friday, Jan. 31. Then, on Monday, Feb. 3, Grant Gordy & Ross Mar- tin will present a show inspired by their recent collaboration on the recording “Year of the Dog.” The doors open for both shows at 6:30 p.m. and the performances begin at 7 p.m. Hailing from Victoria, British Columbia, West My Friend pres- ents what’s described as “soni- cally adventurous acoustic music” that’s inspired by artists, such as Owen Pallett, Joanna Newsom, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists and the Punch Brothers. Arrange- ments of vocals, bass, guitar, mandolin and accordion draw from jazz, classical, folk and pop influences. The Canadian group is con- sidered a key part of a new gen- eration of grassroots folk music, touring regularly through Can- ada, the United States, Europe and beyond. The performance is the fourth Pendleton show for the band and is underwritten by Thompson RV. Gordy and Martin are said to be two of acoustic music’s most forward-thinking virtuoso gui- tarists and both have deep back- grounds in the American musi- cal vernacular. “Year of the Dog” combines originals from each with well-chosen covers from the bluegrass and jazz worlds in which they’ve made their homes. The duo, born of impromptu musical meetings and jams, hon- ors its birth in spontaneity with plenty of seat-of-the-pants solos. In addition, they offer up some elaborate two-guitar arrange- ments that recall other great guitar pairings, such as Eddie Lang and LA GRANDE — A fast-paced and up-tempo concert will feature songs in juxtaposition at Eastern Oregon University. “Opposites Attract” features song and dance performances — with a pro- gram featuring “Highway to Hell” fol- lowed immediately by “Stairway to Heaven.” Other “opposites” pair up the young and old, country and city, or fast and slow. Also, dance styles include break dancing, swing dancing, tap dancing and more. The university’s Chamber Choir will present the show Friday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. All performances will be held in McKenzie Theater on the EOU La Grande campus. Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors and students. Group tickets are $6 each with the purchase of 10 or more. Tickets are available via www. eou.edu/music or at Red Cross Drug and the EOU Bookstore, both in La Grande. For more information, contact Peter Wordelman at 541-962-3352 or pwordelm@eou.edu. Lonnie Johnson, John Scofield and Bill Frisell, Lennon and Har- rison, Rice and Blake, Garcia and Weir, and McLaughlin and DiM- eola. This is the duo’s first Pend- leton appearance, which is under- written by RBH Group CPAs. “We’re always delighted — and, quite frankly, a little amazed — at the top-flight musicians who ask to perform here at the arts center,” said executive direc- tor Roberta Lavadour. “Along with our core Pendleton fans, the shows are attracting a lot of guests from Walla Walla and Tri-Cities too.” Lavadour said for the price of a typical show in larger towns, peo- ple get more bang for their enter- tainment bucks by coming to Pendleton — where they can have a nice dinner at a locally owned restaurant and enjoy music in the intimate setting of Pearson Auditorium. Tickets for each show are $15 per person. They can be pur- chased at www.pendletonarts.org or by calling 541-278-9201. Also, limited tickets will be available at the door.
