The last winning season for the Pio- neers was 2015-16 when they finished 13-12. Things are changing under first-year coach Chris Bryant, whose team is off to an 8-9 start, and won its first Greater Oregon League game in four years last week. “This was a good year to take over,” Bryant said. “We have a group of seniors who are a little behind fundamen- tally, but they are athletic. They came to me last spring when I was hired, and they were ready to embrace their roles. We went to some camps and got some wins this past summer, and that got their confidence up.” The Pioneers beat Ontario 30-29 on Jan. 11, marking their first GOL win since Jan. 30, 2016. “The girls were aware that we did not have anyone on our team that had won a varsity league game,” Bry- ant said. “We thought Ontario was a team we could beat. I didn’t have any intention of driving that far and lose.” Mac-Hi had its second GOL game Monday, a 66-28 loss to No. 2-ranked Baker. “realistically, we have a year before we are ready for them,” Bryant said of the likes of Baker and La Grande. “We don’t have the depth quite yet. We have a good group with a bright future.” since the 2015-16 sea- son, Mac-Hi has gone 0-18 in league play and 4-61 overall. “The people I have talked to, they said the last really good team was 1996,” Bry- ant said. “That was the last really, really good program that came through.
