ENTERTAINMENT Saturday, December 21, 2019 East Oregonian Holiday season tunes up with musical pageant BRIEFLY Fishtrap Fireside welcomes EOU dean Great Pacific hosts 13th annual Christmas concert East Oregonian PENDLETON — The music will be plentiful as Pendle- ton-based rock band James Dean Kindle & The Eastern Oregon Playboys host the annual Great Pacific Christmas Pageant. The free concert is Sunday from 2-7 p.m. at the Great Pacific Wine & Coffee Co., 403 S. Main St., Pendleton. Frontman J.D. Kin- dle describes the all-ages event as “less of a pageant and more of a marathon holiday music concert featuring a slew of local musicians performing in rapid succession.” Kindle said the show embraces an anything-goes approach. He said they try to program a diverse selection of holiday material, including sacred and secular, well known and obscure as well as new and old. In addition, Kindle said he and the Playboys encourage guest performers to do the same. “Occasionally we’ll take some artistic license with a song and totally rearrange it into something nearly unrecognizable,” he said. “We try to not repeat any material from years prior but we’ve broken than rule a few times — not this year though!” Guest performers include Dan Haug, country-jazz fusion group The Hyper Modern Coun- try Quartet, Paul Collins, The Naughty List, Murray Dunlap, father-and-son duo Ian and Harri- son Summerfield, punk rock band The Identities, classical music duo Zach Bank and Viet Block of the Oregon East Symphony, Kipling Bose and Ruby Miller of REV, and indie rock band Misty Mouth. Joining Kindle and The Playboys will be guest singer Oriyah Der- rickson and bell ringer Gordon Hepburn. This year’s event is the 13th annual musical extravaganza, which takes place the Sunday prior to Christmas Eve. “This Christmas show was one of the first performances of the Eastern Oregon Playboys when we formed in the latter half of 2007,” Kindle said. “We expected it to be a one-off event but it’s something we’ve stuck with as a tradition ever since.” ——— Contact Community Edi- tor Tammy Malgesini at tmal- gesini@eastoregonian.com or 541-564-4539 C3 Photo contributed by Ric and Pat Walters Kipling Bose and Ruby Miller, two members of REV, a band formed several years ago at Pendleton Center for the Arts’ Rock & Roll Camp, return for the 2019 Great Pacific Christmas Pageant Sunday in Pendleton. ENTERPRISE — Fishtrap Fireside starts off the new year with two Wallowa County locals and a special guest from Union County. People are invited to find a seat by the fire and hear readings from Moll McCarty, Ralph Swinehart and Nate Lowe, Eastern Oregon University’s dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. “Fishtrap has developed a unique partnership with EOU through Fishtrap College and Summer Fishtrap” said Mike Midlo, Fishtrap program man- ager. “It’s an honor to introduce Nate to the Fireside audience and have him read.” The free event is on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. at Fishtrap, 400 E. Grant St., Enterprise. An open mic follows where audience mem- bers have a chance to get up to the podium and share their stories. Fishtrap Fireside is a free monthly event for Wallowa County writers to read and share their work. The program takes place the first Friday of the month October through April. For more information, contact Midlo at mike@fishtrap.org, 541-426-3623 or visit www.fishtrap.org.
