B2 SPORTS East Oregonian Wednesday, October 9, 2019 Volleyball: Bucks sweep Tigers for nonleague victory Continued from Page B1 for the set. The Tigers came within three points off of senior setter Kenzie Williams’ tip after the break, but the Bucks put up seven unan- swered points, and senior outside hitter Zoe Jones’ kill helped them to a 10-point, 19-9 lead, forcing the sec- ond Tigers timeout. “We struggled,” Wil- liams said. “We didn’t bring the energy in that first set. We reminded ourselves to play our game, and play it to our abilities.” La Grande only man- aged three more points after the break. Meanwhile, Jones, who finished with a match-high 17 kills, helped the Bucks to one more 10-point advantage. Tigers senior outside hitter Jayce Seavert’s return at match point fell out of bounds, handing the Bucks the first set. “It was our mindset,” Pendleton coach Amanda Lapp said. “We saw them earlier in the season. We had a focused talk at practice yesterday. We knew we’d have to come out strong and work for our points.” Pendleton stayed just Staff photo by Kathy Aney Sami Spriet, of Pendleton, sets the ball to a teammate at the net during Tuesday’s nonleague game against La Grande at Warberg Court. one point ahead to start set two until a three-point rally at 5-4 gave them some dis- tance. They took another 10-point lead off junior mid- dle blocker Josie Wilson’s block. The Bucks would get four more 10-point advan- tages before the set was through. Sophomore middle blocker Daisy Jenness Roundup: Hood River shuts out Pendleton Continued from Page B1 Boys soccer PRESCOTT 13, IRRI- GON 1 — Irrigon was down a number of key players and only had one substitute to use off the bench, falling 13-1 at home to Prescott. Marsco Rangel scored the Knights lone goal. Irrigon (3-4, 2-3) plays at Riverside in more Eastern Oregon League action on Saturday. HOOD RIVER VAL- LEY 3, PENDLETON 1 — Despite leading 1-0 at the half, Pendleton surren- dered three goals in the sec- ond half and lost at home to Hood River Valley. Jamie Medonza gave the Buckaroos the lead at the 15th minute. His goal was assisted by Juan Ortega. In the second, Pendleton just couldn’t match Hood River Valley’s intensity, Buck- aroos coach Alex Erazo said. But as Pendleton (3-4-1, 2-2) preps to travel to Rid- geview on Thursday, Erazo said the team is making strides. “We’re getting closer to where we want to be,” he said. Girls soccer HOOD RIVER VAL- LEY 5, PENDLETON 0 — Pendleton couldn’t over- come possession and posi- tion issues that plagued them in the first half, losing 5-0 at Hood River Valley in Inter- mountain Conference play. The Buckaroos let in four goals in the first half. In the second, coach Paul Parker and the team adjusted to bet- ter fill gaps in the center of its defense and contended for possession offensively at more opportune times. Ulti- mately, Pendleton gave up just one goal in the second half. Pendleton (1-6, 1-2) hosts Riverside in another league game on Thursday. HANFORD 5, HERM- ISTON 2 — With every Hermiston senior absent from the field on Tuesday due to injuries, coach Freddy Guizar saw the promise of next year’s roster. “They stepped up,” he said of his team’s under- classmen. “It gave us a look at what next year is going to look like, without all of our seniors.” Freshman forward Min- nie Purves scored the Bulldogs’ first goal, and junior center mid Jayden Ray scored a penalty kick against the hosting Hanford Falcons. Hermiston (6-4, 5-4 MCC) hosts Walla Walla at 7 p.m. on Thursday for another Mid-Columbia Con- ference matchup. slammed a kill that sealed the set. The Tigers jumped out to its first lead of the night at 5-4 to start the final con- test, but Jones tied it at 5-5. Justice had a kill for a 12-8 game later on, forcing Pend- leton’s first timeout. “They’re great compe- tition,” Pendleton senior libero Carissa Cooley said of La Grande. “They always make us work.” Bucks sophomore out- side hitter Sauren Garton rallied off a pair of points to bring Pendleton within two points of La Grande, but the Tigers held firm, eventually taking an eight-point lead. A Pendleton rally was finished off by two con- secutive kills from Jones to bring the set to 21-20, and the Tigers responded with a failed return on the next play, knotting the score at 21-21. “When she gets in front with the ball, you have confidence in her,” Lapp said of Jones. “You know she’s going to make a play with it, whether it’s a hard swing, or putting the ball where the defense isn’t.” Jones posted another kill to put the Bucks out front again, but Williams’ ace tied the score one more time. Tigers outside hit- ter Grace Neer had a block that allowed her team to briefly reclaim the lead, but it wouldn’t last. Jones had an ace, and an unforced error on La Grande’s side of the net fin- ished off the match. “It takes a lot of grit to see a team come back like that in the third set,” Lapp said. House had three aces for the night. Jones, Wilson, and junior designated set- ter DeLaney Duchek each had two. House also had a team-high nine digs. Justice led the Tigers with eight kills, and Seavert finished with 14 digs. Wil- liams followed with seven kills. “The goal is always to win in three,” Cooley said. “We really worked for the win, not only for the peo- ple we played for (for Dig Pink), but for our confi- dence going back into the league.” Pendleton (5-7, 2-3 IMC) hosts Redmond in a conference matchup on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. La Grande (16-4, 3-0 GOL) heads to the Seaside Tour- nament on Saturday. The Bulldogs defeated the Falcons in three sets at Hermiston High School on Tuesday night. Dawgs: Vertrees serves up 5 consecutive points Continued from Page B1 first set and jumped out to a 10-6 lead, but once the Bulldogs got their footing, Hanford had no answer. Emma Combes served up six connective points for a 16-11 lead, then Halee Stubbs put the final eight points on the board for the win. “We have our moments of brilliance,” said first- year Hanford coach Kris- tin White. “They are learning to play together. It’s a struggle.” Hanford again took an early in the second set, 4-1, but it too was short lived. Daisy Maddox and Kambree Baker each served for four points as the Bulldogs rallied for a 15-6 lead. The Falcons picked up a few points here and there, but Maddox would serve the last five points of the set to take a 2-0 lead. Hermiston cruised to a 10-0 lead in the third set, getting nine service points from Stubbs. After a little back and forth, the Bulldogs had a 13-2 lead when Vertrees went to the service line. She reeled off five consecu- tive points for an 18-2 lead. Dowdy would finish off the match with five points in a row. “We are a really young team,” White said. “We have two seniors and the rest are mostly sophomores. They are learning a new system and that is making for a trying season.” Maddox added five kills for the Bulldogs, while Baker had three kills, and Stubbs seven digs and three aces. Hermiston will play at Walla Walla on Thursday. “They are a good team,” Dyck said of the Blue Dev- ils. “They are steady and consistent. If we play there, the way we played tonight, it will be a good match.” Abby Meyer led the Falcons with three kills, while Shyrete Reka had 12 digs and Hannah Marske seven assists.
