Renata Anderson Hearing 2 x 5 celeb bio Kieran Culkin Passion forged in adversity Kieran Culkin’s career trajec- tory has been extremely unique. Not only was he a child actor, but one from a tight-knit, dynastic Hollywood family. Culkin grew up in the spotlight and had to start contending with the pressures of fame and dysfunctional family life from a young age. Born in 1982 to Patricia Brentrup and Kit Culkin, Kieran embarked on his acting career in 1990 when he played a minor role opposite his older brother, Macaulay Culkin, in “Home Alone.” His early work was largely thrust upon him, as his father leveraged the success of the young Macaulay to gain bargaining power and influence in Hollywood, infamously pres- suring his other children into high-profile performance careers as well. While the notorious tyranny of the Culkin patriarch made childhood isolating and painful for the siblings, Kieran has ultimately enjoyed success and acclaim from the emotional com- plexity of his acting. Culkin shared with Vanity Fair that Steer would often interrupt his dialogue in the middle of a take to say, “Kieran, that was Nickelodeon. He was nominated more famous brother with his first major role as Igby in Burr Steer’s 2002 film “Igby Goes Down.” Culkin attributes much of his ar- tistic growth to the time he spent working with Steer, who took a vested interest in making him “unlearn” some mediocre habits LET US MEAT YOUR NEEDS PORK BOX $ 50 BOX INCLUDES: • 4 Pork Chops • 2 Pork Steak • 1 Pork Roast • 3 Pkgs Pork Sausage • 2 Pkgs Bacon • 2 Ham Steaks All individually packaged for your convenience. 541.567.2011 EAST OREGON EVENTS 253 W. He starred in the second season of “Fargo,” in which he played Rye Gerhardt, the son of a local crime matriarch in Min- nesota; his character’s killing spurs the drama of the season as the investigation stirs up secrets. In his current role as Roman Roy in HBO’s “Succession,” Kieran is yet again playing an adult son in a powerful, cutthroat family. In an interview with The Playlist, Culkin expressed that it has been great fun, and even “therapeutic,” to play the conniving, sociopathic Roman: “I know people like that in my life, and sometimes it’s in- credibly frustrating,” he said, ex- plaining that the role has helped him to gain an understanding of some of the situations that have played out in his own life. Though Kieran’s childhood was fraught with emotional trauma and the intense pressures of fame, he has found both critical success and artistic fulfilment in the career that he has forged. The Season 2 premiere of “Succession” airs Sunday, Aug. 11, on HBO.
