trucks honking their horns
in support of the activ-
ity, said Kristi Smalley,
a board member with The
Arc. Jan Schroth, The Arc
Umatilla County president,
was thrilled with the level
of support for the walk and
encouraged each participant
to bring a friend next year
so that they can double the
number of walkers.

HERMISTON — The
inaugural Intellectual Dis-
ability Awareness Walk
drew 50 participants.
Sponsored by The Arc
Umatilla County, the walk
raised $1,110, which will
be utilized to help fund the
Summer Inclusion Camp.
The June 22 event fea-
tured signs, which partic-
ipants carried along the
1-mile route near The Arc
Building in Hermiston. The
message was to express
their desire to bring atten-
tion to people who thrive
in spite of intellectual and/
or developmental disabil-
ities, with signs reading
such things as, “I walk

McKay Creek Estates celebrates with luau

PENDLETON — Mem-
bers of the Eastern Ore-
gon Philippine Ameri-
can Community recently
brought smiles to the faces
and fun times to resi-
dents, families and staff at
McKay Creek Estates.
The annual Luau Party,
held June 20 at the Pend-
leton assisted living facil-
ity, featured both Hawai-
ian and Philippine dances.
In addition, students of the
Oregon East Symphony
played violins.
“The fun part was when
the group showed residents
and staff how to hula and
danced the famous Pearly
Shell,” said Noemi Wiseman,
EOPAC president. “Everyone
had an amazing experience.”

Local Special Olympians tee off in La Grande
Weston Middle School receives Beamer family award

LA GRANDE — A group
of athletes and coaches from
Hermiston/Pendleton Spe-
cial Olympics Local Pro-
gram recently took to the
links in La Grande.
The group teed off with
Union County Special
Olympics June 24 at the
La Grande Country Club.
Four athletes competed in
the Individual Skills Com-
petition, earning scores for
accurate putting, chipping
and driving. Also, 15 ath-
letes along with their Uni-
fied Partners participated
in an alternating shot nine-
hole format and one athlete
from Union County com-
pleted all nine holes as a sin-
gle competitor.
The afternoon event
was coordinated by Pam
Thompson, Union County
golf coach, along with local
coach Mark Smalley with
the support of program
coordinators Doug Trice
(Union County) and Angela
Schneider
(Hermiston/
Pendleton).
The event was the first
time that Union County and
Hermiston/Pendleton have
joined forces to provide a

Althadel Johns Beamer
Memorial Scholarship for
2019 is being awarded to
Weston Middle School.
The fund is managed by
Blue Mountain Commu-
nity Foundation as a per-
manent endowment. Since
Althadel’s death in 1996,
gifts from the fund have
helped students in the Ath-
ena-Weston School Dis-
trict with assistance on

pete in the June 24 Union County Special Olympics end-of-
the-season golf event.

completing the golf com-
petition, athletes enjoyed
pizza and all participants
received certificates for
their efforts.
“The La Grande Coun-
try Club did a wonderful
job providing a venue at no
cost to our local program,”
Smalley said. “The course
was in excellent shape and
our golfers had an amazing
time.”
The Hermiston/Pendle-
ton Local Program #510 will
hold its annual Fundraising
Tournament Aug. 10 at the
Echo Hills Golf Course.

recently held its 55-year
reunion.
During the June
14-16 event, class-
mates enjoyed an infor-
mal get-together Friday
evening at the Rain-
bow Cafe. On Saturday
afternoon, they attended
a picnic at Pendleton
Community
Park‘s
Wildhorse Shelter. The
weekend
concluded
with a Sunday morn-
ing breakfast at the Blue
Mountain Community
College Student Union.
Both meals were catered
by Simply Catering of
Pendleton.
Participants traveled
from Arizona, Califor-
nia, Oregon and Wash-
ington to join their class-
mates for the weekend.
