East Oregonian HERMISTON — The inaugural Intellectual Dis- ability Awareness Walk drew 50 participants. Sponsored by The Arc Umatilla County, the walk raised $1,110, which will be utilized to help fund the Summer Inclusion Camp. The June 22 event fea- tured signs, which partic- ipants carried along the 1-mile route near The Arc Building in Hermiston. The annual Luau Party, held June 20 at the Pend- leton assisted living facil- ity, featured both Hawai- ian and Philippine dances. Local Special Olympians tee off in La Grande Weston Middle School receives Beamer family award East Oregonian East Oregonian LA GRANDE — A group of athletes and coaches from Hermiston/Pendleton Spe- cial Olympics Local Pro- gram recently took to the links in La Grande. The group teed off with Union County Special Olympics June 24 at the La Grande Country Club. Four athletes competed in the Individual Skills Com- petition, earning scores for accurate putting, chipping and driving. Also, 15 ath- letes along with their Uni- fied Partners participated in an alternating shot nine- hole format and one athlete from Union County com- pleted all nine holes as a sin- gle competitor. The afternoon event was coordinated by Pam Thompson, Union County golf coach, along with local coach Mark Smalley with the support of program coordinators Doug Trice (Union County) and Angela Schneider (Hermiston/ Pendleton). The event was the first time that Union County and Hermiston/Pendleton have joined forces to provide a WALLA WALLA — The Larry Beamer family recently announced that the Althadel Johns Beamer Memorial Scholarship for 2019 is being awarded to Weston Middle School. The fund is managed by Blue Mountain Commu- nity Foundation as a per- manent endowment. During the June 14-16 event, class- mates enjoyed an infor- mal get-together Friday evening at the Rain- bow Cafe. On Saturday afternoon, they attended a picnic at Pendleton Community Park‘s Wildhorse Shelter. The weekend concluded with a Sunday morn- ing breakfast at the Blue Mountain Community College Student Union. Both meals were catered by Simply Catering of Pendleton. Participants traveled from Arizona, Califor- nia, Oregon and Wash- ington to join their class- mates for the weekend.
