Tune in to NBC for live coverage of the event that has been deemed “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” The Kentucky Derby is the first of three races that make up the thoroughbred horse racing Triple Crown. Last year, jock- ey Mike Smith rode Justify to a Kentucky Derby win — his first since 2005. The pair went on to win the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, making them the 13th Triple Crown winners. Before Justify, American Pharoah and jockey Victor Es- pinoza were the last pair to win the Triple Crown in 2015. This year’s Kentucky Derby marks the first time in history that the race has had a Japanese-bred horse in the field. Master Fencer earned the invitation to Churchill Downs after accumulating 19 points on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby, a series of races intended to provide a place in the Kentucky Derby to the top finisher. The first Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby was held in 2017, but this is the first year that a qualifier has accepted the prestigious offer. If the honor of running in the historic event wasn’t incentive enough for riders, the purse prize certainly is. This year’s purse was increased from $2 million to $3 million, with the winner earning $1.86 million. The Kentucky Derby attracts the largest attendance in North America, which creates an unparalleled atmo- sphere for riders and spectators alike. Despite the incessant rain at last year’s race, almost 158,000 people were in at- tendance, making it the eighth-largest gathering in Kentucky Derby history.
