Deike wins two matches By ANNIE FOWLER East Oregonian Each time out on the mat is a learn- ing experience for the Hermiston girls wrestling team. Wednesday, the Bulldogs hosted fi ve other Mid-Columbia Conference teams in a mixer, where each girl got any- where between one and four matches depending on the number of competi- tors in their weight class. Hermiston’s Jazmin Deike won both of her matches at 190 pounds, beating Chiawana’s Lizzeth Jauregui 13-3, then pinning Chiawana’s Rachel Castaneda in 3 minutes. “I have won a few matches,” said Deike, who is in her fi rst year of wres- tling. “If I win, it is by good luck.” Or by using her training — all four weeks of it. Against Castaneda, Deike trailed 5-1 in the second round, and Castaneda had her cradled and on her back. Deike was able to break her grasp, maneuver a reversal, and get a quick pin. “I just made sure to get my leg out,” Deike said. “I knew if I got to my belly I had a fi ghting chance. This is really physically demanding. You have to want it and give it all you’ve got. Despite a second half comeback, the Riverside Pirates couldn’t stop Steven- son’s Isaac Hoidal, who posted 30 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 59-54 road win on Wednesday. “This is the best we’ve done against Stevenson,” said Riverside head coach Clair Costello. “Coming off last night (a 55-42 loss to Weston-McEwen), I saw that my kids were tired, but they caught their second wind in the last half tonight.” Riverside guards Juan Reyna and Johan Pena combined for a short-lived 5-2 Pirates lead before the Bulldogs came back to put the fi rst quarter away, 15-13. In the second quarter, Hoidal got to work. The 6-foot-3 guard dominated from the inside and scored 17 of his team’s 20 points for the quarter, leaving the Pirates down 35-25 at the half. Hoidal opened the third with two 3-pointers and a free throw, and post Charles Hobbs sank a fi eld goal to broaden the Bulldogs lead 43-25 before Riverside rallied back. Wing Francisco Barajas hit a 3-pointer and Reyna scored fi ve points of his own to narrow the gap. With two minutes left in the quarter, Barajas scored seven straight points, including a 3-pointer, to pull the Pirates within eight points of Stevenson. “Francisco really played well for us today,” Costello said. “He shoots 3’s all the time. That’s just what he does.” In the fourth, the Pirates recorded fi ve more points and held Stevenson score- less for three minutes until Hobbs found the net to get the Bulldogs back on track. Guard Cristian Rea scored outside the paint before Hoidal and Hobbs combined to put the game just out of reach for the Pirates. “We started playing more as a team,” said Barajas on his team’s second-half return. “We played with our hearts and kept up with our intensity. Stevenson was aggressive and fought hard, but we hung in there.” Barajas led Riverside with 22 points and was 6 of 8 at the line. Pena followed with 11 of his own. “A loss is a loss, but we’re playing bigger and bigger competition,” Costello said. “This shows that we can compete.” Riverside (4-5) travels to Stanfi eld (2-6) on Friday for a 6 p.m. tip-off. COLLEGE UPDATE Ramirez has CBC women at 6-2 on the hoop season By ANNIE FOWLER East Oregonian Sara Ramirez (Hermiston), a 5-foot-8 guard for Columbia Basin College, is aver- aging 16.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and two steals a game for the 6-2 Hawks. Ramirez had 13 points and 10 rebounds in a 72-57 win over Clackamas on Dec. 8, and led the Hawks with 15 points and 13 rebounds in a 63-44 win over Peninsula on Dec. 7. CBC will host Centralia at 7 p.m. Friday. Sam Colbray (Hermiston) has an 8-2 record this season for Iowa State. Colbray, a four-time state wrestling champion for the Bulldogs, has two pins this Abby Williams Sam Colbray Dylan Grogan season, as well as a big win over 11th-ranked Cash Wilcke of Iowa. With 5 seconds remaining in their Dec. 1 Big 12 match, Colbray took down Wilcke to post a 7-6 victory. Colbray, a redshirt sophomore, wrestles at 184 pounds. Bob Coleman (Hermiston), a junior at Sara Ramirez Bob Coleman Oregon State, is 9-3 this season, with one pin. Coleman, who typically wrestles at 184 pounds, bumped up a weight and secured the 20-17 win for the Beavers on Dec. 9 against California State Bakersfi eld. Coleman won 8-3 at 197 to give OSU a 20-14 lead and put the match out of reach for the Roadrunners. Dylan Grogan (Stanfi eld) has started fi ve of six games for Blue Mountain Com- munity College, and is averaging 12.8 points, eight rebounds and 1.3 assists per game for the 2-4 Timberwolves. A 6-4 freshman, Grogan was a three-sport athlete in high school, also playing football and baseball. Abby Williams (Pendleton), a 5-10 freshman, fi nished eighth for George Fox in the 200 backstroke Dec. 1 at the Bruin Invi- tational. She fi nished in a time of 2 minutes, 37.17 seconds. Williams also was ninth in the 100 back- stroke (1:11.83) and 10th in the 50 free (29.20). SPORTS SHORTS ESPN signs Jessica Mendoza to multiyear extension (AP) — Jessica Mendoza will have more of a presence on vari- ous ESPN platforms starting next baseball season. Mendoza signed a multiyear extension with ESPN to remain part of the “Sunday Night Baseball” announcer’s booth and make more studio appearances. In 2015, Mendoza became the fi rst female analyst for a nation- ally televised MLB game. She did her fi rst Sunday night game on Aug. 30, 2015. “Being in New York for 10 days during the World Series and appearing on a bunch of shows, I felt like it was a trial run to have more of a studio presence,” Mendoza said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. “The more consistently I started to do it, the more I grew to love it. It allows me to push baseball ideas and content in a bunch of different places.” Mendoza, who has been with the network since 2007, has already been a fi xture on “Baseball Tonight” for many seasons but the new agreement means she will appear more regularly on “SportsCenter” and “Get Up!” Mendoza’s main assignment will remain “Sunday Night Base- ball.” This will be her fourth full season but only her second work- ing alongside Alex Rodriguez, Matt Vasgersian and Buster Olney. Mendoza said she quickly found a rapport with her boothmates. The Sunday night games will begin an hour earlier next season, at 7 p.m. Eastern.
