SPORTS Tuesday, November 13, 2018 East Oregonian Page 3B Shelley, Shyne help Utah beat UO Parkinson’s four TD catches lead Stanford past Beavers 48-17 By MATTHEW COLES Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY — Jason Shelley may be a freshman and undersized for a major college quar- terback, but he doesn’t lack confidence. “We know what we can do. We know we can play. We’re here for a reason,” Shelley said. “We couldn’t wait to prove it.” In his first start, Shel- ley ran for two touchdowns and Armand Shyne had 174 yards rushing to power Utah past Oregon 32-25 on Saturday. The Utes (7-3, 5-3 Pac- 12) lost Tyler Huntley, their starting quarterback, and running back Zack Moss, who had already rushed for 1,092 yards this season, to injury within a few days of each other. “They could either pick up the slack and move for- ward or feel sorry and mope and pout. But that is not us. That is not our culture,” Utah coach Kyle Whit- tingham said of his team, which stayed atop the Pac- 12 South standings. Shelley utilized quick passes, a strong running game and some misdirec- tion in the offense to com- plete 18 of 31 passes for 262 yards with no interceptions. “He rose to the occa- sion tonight,” Whittingham said. On a drive keyed by a 36-yard pass to Jaylen Dixon, Shelley punched in the go-ahead touchdown from 2 yards out with 6:48 to play. “It was a pretty exciting debut for me,” Shelley said and then chuckled at his understatement. The Utah defense, which dominated in the first quarter, and then was on its collective heels when Justin Herbert start- ing finding receivers all over the field, stopped the Ducks (6-4, 3-4) on the ensuing possession when Jaylon Johnson broke up a have been working at tim- ing. It was great to see those two connect.” Parkinson became inte- gral to Stanford’s offense after top receiver JJ Arce- ga-Whiteside suffered an injury in the first quar- ter of last week’s loss at Washington. “I was joking with him before the game that I’d catch a touchdown pass for him,” Parkinson said. Jordan Choukair kicked a 40-yard field goal for the Beavers on the final play of the first half. Love, who did not play after a brief appearance in the third quarter, finished off a 5-play, 75-yard drive with a 28-yard run that brought comparisons from last year when he set a school rushing record and was the Heisman Trophy runner-up. “He had some good plays. He’s a good player,” Oregon State coach Jon- athan Smith said. “He’s a tough kid. They’re throw- ing the ball more than they have, but they can still run the ball.” The Cardinal broke it open in the second quarter, scoring the first three touch- downs, all passes to Par- kinson, and taking a 34-7 advantage before the Bea- vers closed within 34-17 by halftime. Air quality The game was played with an air quality index close to 150 through the night, on the low end of the ‘dangerous’ level, due to smoke from the Camp Fire in Butte County. Smoke was visible throughout the contest. “It’s been a rough week,” Shaw said. “All our thoughts and prayers go to them. But I was happy to play the game at its proper time.” Up next Oregon State travels to Washington on Saturday. By RICK EYMER Associated Press AP Photo/Rick Bowmer Utah quarterback Jason Shelley (15) is hosted in the air by teammates after scoring against Oregon in the second half during an NCAA college football game on Satur- day in Salt Lake City. DUCK FOOTBALL Utah Oregon 32 25 fourth-down pass. Herbert went 20-for- 33 for 288 yards, but was sacked four times and sim- ply ran out of time. Dil- lon Mitchell caught eight passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns, including multiple acrobatic grabs. “We knew he was going to make some plays. He’s a really good quarterback and has some good guys around him,” said Utah’s Chase Hansen, who had 3.5 tack- les for loss and 13 overall. Utah lost more than 80 percent of their offensive firepower when Huntley broke his collarbone at Ari- zona State and Moss’s knee locked up early in the week and put him on crutches. But that didn’t faze Shelley and Shyne. “We don’t get nervous. We just play football,” Shelley said. Shyne’s running prow- ess bolstered a sustained drive that gobbled up Ore- gon’s time outs and culmi- nated in Matt Gay’s sixth field goal from 24 yards — a new school record. “It felt good,” Shyne said. “It reminded me of when I was playing a cou- ple years ago.” That was before Moss asserted him- self as one of the nation’s top backs and Shyne strug- gled with injuries. After Utah’s last score, the Ducks had only 15 sec- onds to drive the entire field. Herbert got one com- pletion but the clock ran out as he spiked the ball on second down. The offi- cials ran off the field — trailed by some of the Ore- gon coaches — and then returned to announce the time had indeed expired after video review. Kano Dillon blocked a punt at the Utah 3-yard- line, which led to Herbert’s touchdown pass to Travis Dye. Herbert rolled out to his right again and hit Jay- lon Redd for a two-point conversion and Oregon led for the first time, 25-22. “I felt that we had momentum,” Ducks line- backer Thomas Graham said. “As a defense, we stepped up in the second half but we gave up that deep ball in the second half and didn’t give our offense another chance.” Up next The Ducks play host to Arizona State — which has won three in a row, includ- ing a 38-20 win over Utah — next Saturday. Utah travels to Boulder to take on Colorado next Saturday. STANFORD, Calif. — Tight end Colby Parkin- son and quarterback K.J. Costello have been work- ing on their timing for over a year. It came to fruition Saturday. Parkinson caught all four of K.J. Costello’s touch- down passes and Stanford beat Oregon State 48-17 Saturday to become bowl eligible. “We were getting the match-ups we wanted,” Par- kinson said. “That’s what K.J. and I have been work- ing on. K.J. puts the ball where it needs to be. It’s what we do in practice every day.” Bryce Love scored a touchdown and rushed for 90 yards, his most since gaining 136 against Southern Cali- fornia on Sept. 8. Cameron Scarlett also scored for the Cardinal (6-4, 4-3 Pac-12) with a career-long run of 41 yards. Dorian Maddox scored on a 1-yard run, his first career touchdown. Jake Luton passed for 205 yards and touchdowns of 63 yards to Trevon Bradford and 7 yards to Noah Togiai. Jermar Jefferson rushed for 109 yards for Oregon State (2-8, 1-6). Bradford finished with five receptions for 120 yards. Last year, the teams com- bined for 486 total yards in Stanford’s 15-14 win. The teams had 632 by halftime on Saturday. Costello threw for 342 yards and touchdown passes of 28, 9, 75 and 5 yards. He’s thrown four touchdowns in three games this season, the most since Andrew Luck did in 2011. Parkinson fin- ished with six catches and 166 yards. “K.J. played extremely well,” Stanford coach David Shaw said. “Him and Colby EASTERN OREGON marketplace Place classified ads online at www.easternoregonmarketplace.com or call 1-800-962-2819 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
